Okay, I need to get some more sleep, because I thought the headline said "The First Lady Is Pregnant". I got all excited and happy. Now I'm kinda bummed that she's not. #michelleobamagirlscouts
Those little bishes are DEAD to me since they discontinued the lemon cookies. I was in withdrawal for A WHOLE MONTH. DEAD TO ME, YOU HEAR!!!??? #michelleobamagirlscouts
Perhaps the Girl Scout Law will become actual Law:
The Girl Scout Law
I will do my best to be
honest and fair,
friendly and helpful,
considerate and caring,
courageous and strong, and
responsible for what I say and do,
and to
respect myself and others,
respect authority,
use resources wisely,
make the world a better place, and
be a sister to every Girl Scout
@erinna: I still have that memorized. I was kind of embarrassed to be a Girl Scout in middle and high school, but now I have only fond memories. #michelleobamagirlscouts
@Stephanie Young: Actually, per Girl Scouts of the USA, you do not have to say the "God" part. On their website, it actually says something to the effect that you can insert whatever fits your beliefs there. #michelleobamagirlscouts

I was in one of these camps when I was younger, and while I can't say that this affected my career decision--I knew all along that I wanted to go into science--these camps are great for teaching girls that its not weird to want to be a girl in science. But somehow, it also rubs me the wrong way, but maybe that's only because it makes me sad that there is still such a large gender gap that it is clear that girls somehow need extra encouragement to go into science. But I guess I was lucky to come from a family of scientists, so I never dealt with any, "Girls don't want to do science" bullshit.
I was led to believe that science was all looking through telescopes and doing fun experiments with multicolored weights and springs, but then I got to high school and discovered that you have to do an awful lot of fruit fly counting and formula remembering to get to the point where you're doing awesome stuff.
@morninggloria: I concur. All this 'science is fun' stuff is nothing more than false advertising. Things like this made me want to be an astronomer until I was about 11 and realised that an awful lof astronomy involves math and relativity and not just looking up through telescopes. I was led astray!!!
@morninggloria: And then you get to your undergrad years and learn that science involves a lot of deciphering problem set questions, Greek letters, and your professor's voice on 2 hours of sleep. And that unlike all your friends who made the decision to not go to nerd school, your social life is centered more around the people you work with than the people you party with, mainly because the people you party with is a much smaller sample size. And then you realize that in spite of yourself, you derive some sort of masochistic pleasure from all this, so yay science.
Maybe I should stop speaking in the second person.
I went to a program like this at the University of Illinois when I was eleven. I learned more about physics in those four weeks than I did in a whole year of high school.
The College of Marine Sciences at USF has a similar program, called Oceanography Camp for Girls. They take a bunch of eighth-grade girls and spend a month in the summer teaching them all about oceanography - taking research trips out to sea, analyzing the chemical composition of sea water, things like that.
It's the coolest program ever, and I so wish I could have done it when I was a girl.

I could never say the "God" part, though. I was an asshole back then, too. #michelleobamagirlscouts

On my honor, I will try
to serve God and my country
to help people at all times
and to live by the Girl Scout Law.
(I had to memorize that, but not the Law, so I had no idea what I was actually promising in that last line!) #michelleobamagirlscouts

I would have liked it better back then if I'd been permitted to leave out "God." Not likely in a North Carolina town, though!
