Over 30 And Single? Obviously, You Can't Be Happy

Dr. Pam Spurr is apparently a shitty therapist, because there's no other way to explain her Daily Male, I mean, Daily Mail column "Forget This Tosh About 'Freemales' - Single Women Who Say They Are Happy Are Lying." The title alone makes me want to shake her, but reading it, oh dear God, reading it made me realize that she also needs to lose her license to treat her patients and be shaken by the shoulders until the stupid falls out. Why is it that some people — usually women — think that the only path to personal fulfillment is at the end of an aisle? More »

The Cherie Blair Bashing Appears To Be Well-Deserved

We often discuss girl-on-girl crime in these parts, which is to say that we condemn baseless bad-mouthing of a woman based on her appearance or her gender. But what we don't always point out is the idea that well-argued criticism is not the same as crime. This is not a motherfucking kumbaya circle, people. Which is why I have no problem with what Slate describes as the "torrent of abuse, contempt, and sheer loathing" that is being directed towards Cherie Blair for her apparently abhorrent memoir, Speaking for Myself. What does bug me is that Slate scribe Geoffrey Wheatcroft feels the need to point out that "as with the deadliest assaults on Hillary Clinton, which came from female stiletto heels, the most brutal denunciations of Cherie were from women." Immediately after, he quotes a Daily Mail critic. Come on: That's like saying the worst insults on Clinton came from a female Fox News anchor! Women need to be able to critique other women without it being described as some alpha female cat fight based on jealousy or other, free-floating insecurity. More »

Teenage girls who view themselves as "attractive" are 35% more likely to be indirectly bullied, according to a new study from the University of Alberta. ("Indirectly bullied" is shorthand for being gossiped about or being placed in "emotionally damaging scenarios.") Girls who are sexually active are also more at risk for this kind of indirect victimization. Teenage boys, on the other hand, are 25% less likely to be bullied if they perceive themselves as attractive. Note to researchers: this behavior doesn't necessarily stop when high school is over. British Schoolgirls: Now More Violent Than Ever!

Although the number of youth crimes has dropped overall in Britain, girl crime has risen by a quarter since 2005, reports the Guardian. New research from the Youth Justice Board shows that the types of misdeeds most often committed are theft and petty violence. English psychiatrists are trying to figure out why these girls are so angry, and their conclusions leave me wanting. Dr. Ann Hagell, who co-authored a study about anti-social behavior in 1998, says you need to look at long term trends and not be swayed by tabloid headlines about "happy slapping." Hagell thinks girls are more violent these days because of the influence of teenage boys. "Before, we had single-sex peer groups, but now they are more likely to be socialising with boys. In the 1950s they just didn't have the chance to do that," Hagell tells the BBC. More »

Dr. Joyce Brothers is schooling us about girl fighting in the Seattle P.I. Fun fact: our allegedly peacenik sisters north of the border are just as violent as we are! "Canada's statistics show many more girls getting in trouble for serious violent crimes, with the rate doubling between 1986 and 2005," Brothers points out. Related: three teens in Land O'Lakes (not joking) Florida filmed themselves beating up a fourth girl and put it up on youtube. WTF is in the water down there? [Seattle P.I., Tampa Bays 10]

Diamond Girls Show Teen Spirit • Barbara Walters Admits To Affair

Girls' softball team comes to aid of injured opposing player; warms hearts nationwide. • Army woman given Silver Star for valor in combat; removed from Army camp because of gender ineligibility for said combat. • Suburb in Chile gives free Viagra to horny seniors. • Shocker: Men have varying sexual turn-ons. • Depressed gals suffer from dementia, depressed gents suffer strokes. • Ancient women in pre-Islamic Arabia had wide-ranging rights and freedoms. • No sex scandal will keep Ashley Dupre from embracing B & T roots. • Barbara Walters confesses to long-ago affair with U.S. Senator Edwards Brooke. • Boulder woman promises to never again dye her dog pink. • Poor Hispanic women eat better than poor blacks and whites. • Canada raises age of consent to 16, Degrassi Community School underclassmen complain.

A group of middle school girls in Southern Indiana was allegedly "inspired" by the Florida teenagers who brutally beat a frenemy and then attempted to post the violence on YouTube. These Indiana tweens — pupils at Clarksville Middle School and aged 12-14 — lured a classmate to a parking lot, filmed themselves abusing her and then posted the video on PhotoBucket.com (it has subsequently been removed). According to the AP, "The video begins with one girl arguing with the victim and escalates into a fight during which the 12-year-old is repeatedly hit in the head as other girls watch and laugh." Charges have yet to be filed and police are still interviewing the perpetrators. The Clarksville superintendent says he does not plan to discipline these bullies because the violence did not occur on school grounds. Again, we ask: How many kids have to die before bullying is taken seriously? [AP via MSNBC]

Brigitte Bardot Is A Racist; Churchgoing Girls Are Apple Polishers

• Sure, yesterday was Black Day, but it was also Cake and Cunnilingus Day! • A blind man stabbed his fiancee for not wearing her engagement ring. • Mothers experience less eating problems than their drunk and childless peers.• The "D.C. Madam" was found guilty of prostitutin'. • Famous Muslim-hater, Brigitte Bardot, is on trial again for racist slurs. • The girls involved in a playground beatdown of a 10-year-old girl may face expulsion from school. • Gay couples are having trouble obtaining divorces. • Saudi female students and housewives plan Olympic dreams with controversial basketball team. • Social Darwinism? Girls who attend church religiously, are (possibly) harder workers.

Cheerleaders May Face Life In Jail For Beating Fellow Teen

The ultra violent cheerleaders from Florida who attacked a fellow pep squad member with the intention of posting a video on YouTube have bigger fish to fry than missing trips to the beach. According to CNN, the six girls involved in the beatings and the two boys who acted as lookouts will be tried as adults. All eight suspects are facing charges of kidnapping and battery, while three of the eight are facing charges of tampering with a witness. Frank Green, executive director of Keys to Safer Schools, tells CNN, "In one respect, girls have always been more vicious than boys. Their violence is of a personal nature... girls want to cause pain and make the other girl feel bad." More »

The Meanest Girls At School Are Often The Most Popular

A recent story out of Florida concerns six teenage girls — cheerleaders — who lured a former friend to a home where they beat her for 30 minutes while videotaping the entire act. They wanted to post the footage on YouTube and MySpace; according to the local news outlet in Orlando, a girl's voice can be heard on the tape saying: "There's only 17 seconds left; make it good." The victim in the attack suffered a concussion, loss of hearing in one ear, damage to her left eye and numerous bruises. And the footage being aired on news outlets is what happened after she was knocked unconscious. But guess what? The girls who participated in the attack probably have more friends than ever. Because new research shows that "Mean Girls" are the most popular girls in school. More »
