Is Partisan Politics Bad For The Children? |

anywho: My little brother's first grade class held a mock election yesterday after which a parent volunteer asked my brother for whom he had voted. When he replied "Obama" she told him that "Obama kills babies"!!!
He told my mom, who called her immediately and told her off. She then told my brother that what the lady said was not true and he said that he believes my mom because she is older. So his logic is a little sketch, but he's still a smart kid.
Gosh, I'm still so pissed that someone told my brother that. To tell a child something that is both downright false and terrifying is just such a horrible thing to do. Most kids could have been traumatized by that information. Also, what was the point of that? Was she hoping that he would vote republican in his 5th grade mock election?
I kept asking my mom to tell me who said that to him because I was seriously going to kick their ass, but she wouldn't because she said it had been dealt with and was over. She's a classy lady.
I know I'm probably taking this too seriously, but I guess I'm just really protective of my brother.

"It was a true love story. When I was volunteering in India during WW2, I dated an American paratrooper. He proposed and gave me his parachute and told me to use it to make my wedding dress." She paused. "But he was a Republican, so I knew it wouldn't work out."
This little apple didn't fall far from the tree, that's for sure.

When I was in junior high school he had my sister and I go to different precincts to witness the opening of the voting machines after the polls had closed. This was open to the public and how campaigns received their "early numbers". The machines had scrolls of paper with tally marks for each candidate and it was counted by hand. Anyone who was there could count them.
I LOVED feeling like I was involved in something important. My political views do not mirror my fathers, but he did instill a healthy interest in politics at a very early age.

If their opinions turn out different than you hoped then they might have something to teach you in return.

She's asked me "why you gonna vote for Marack Bobama, mommy?" I explained to her that all the grownups in America get to decide who they think will be best at running the country, and that mommy thinks Mr. Obama would do the best job.
I did however call Da Other Guy "McGrumpy" in front of her, and it did stick. When she sees him on teevee she goes, "McGrumpy gonna lose, hooray!"
From her lips to G-d's ears.

I have been a tree hugging bleeding heart since I can remember so obviously it doesn't always take. My dad and I do NOT talk about politics and it did effect our relationship. :P

I think the next generation will be OK. When my three year old son saw me dressed as Sarah Palin for Halloween, his first reaction was to grab a plastic baseball bat and hit me in the leg. Good boy, always kneecap the crazy ladies.
