    Oh geez... here's where I begin having a problem. What exactly does unattractive mean? Is unattractive something given at birth? Or can makeup, grooming, plastic surgery, or any other type of manipulation of the natural state stave off ugly?!? When we talk about unattractiveness, are we talking about things a person can change, or things a person is POWERLESS against?
    Honestly, I'm like 3 Bloody Mary's into the evening and for some reason, this is stuck in my craw. #germainegreer

    If you haven't already read the comments on the Oprah article, please do! Every single one of them basically says: "I'm a feminist and this article is crap." It's awesome!

    Why does sexy always have to come into everything? I don't need to feel sexy 24/7 because *GASP* I am not defined by my sexuality, my sexual appeal to others, or as a sex object!

    Amazing, but true.

    I don't need to feel sexy to do my job well. It frankly never even occurs to me. Being pre-occupied with either feeling sexy, or considered sexy by others, seems like a fun way to develop an objectification complex.

    It should go without saying that I don't feel sex-less, either. But I'd think it would be exhausting to, among all the other things I need to accomplish in a day, managing to be or feel "sexy" the whole time, too. That just seems like pressure I don't need when I have deadlines.

    This is just another version of expecting/requiring women to be thinking about our sexual object status all the time. And frankly, I've got much better things to do. #germainegreer

    @tiredfairy: I rarely feel "sexy", but it's not that I feel "not-sexy". It's that I am not thinking about it. When I am taking notes in class, I hardly care if I am attractive. It doesn't cross my mind, and why should it? That's not what I'm there for.

    I'm down with that. There are situations in which I want to be seen as sexy, and many in which sexiness is irrelevant or even harmful to me, so... why should I push to be unilaterally sexy, anyway? #germainegreer

    Every single day someone with a position of power and/or a voice in major media questions "the orthodoxies of feminism." It's not a radical act to make up shit about feminism and point out that it smells. What continues to be a radical act is to insist that each woman be judged on her individual merits instead of as a monolith. #germainegreer

    @whynotshesaid: It depends on your generation -- The Female Eunuch was a groundbreaking book, especially coming on the heels of the sexual revolution when women were still being defined and confined by a narrow definition of "womanhood." She was brave and coarse and ballsy at a time when "nice" women didn't talk that way. Some of this stuff seems strident and loopy now, maybe, but it was so important in moving the conversation forward. #germainegreer

    @ardentlilac: Oh, I'm aware of the role she played in the earlier years of the women's lib movement. It's just that she hasn't really done much on this side of the pond, and I wasn't sure if she had done anything on the other side, and whether that was enough to justify the fact that she is pulled out as the whipping girl every time some intellectually lazy dolt wants to talk about how damaging feminism is. #germainegreer

    @whynotshesaid: Maybe she and Doris Lessing and Betty Friedan and Gloria Steinem are trounced on over and over as they're more "mainstream" and "available" while another debate seems to have been held, then faded, from the academic arena? I'd like to see them grapple with Katha Pollitt, Molly Haskell, Elaine Showalter or Julia Kristeva! (Yes, I took a graduate gender studies course, can you tell). #germainegreer

    Oh, great. If I decide not to comply with my prescribed feminine gender role, I'm not my "fullest potential self"? I highly doubt when I go to med school they're going to be telling me that the key to power and success as a neurosurgeon is how sexy and feminine I'm feeling when I'm operating on someone's brain. I'm thinking it might be more along the lines of, oh, actually knowing what I'm doing.

    Also, "femininist" just sounds like you have a pronunciation problem, Ms. Salmansohn. Sorry. #germainegreer

    First of all, the term "feminine-ist" is really unwieldy -- it sounds like "feminist," pronounced with a stutter. She can't really expect people to drop the word into actual conversation, so why create a new term? It seems like she just wants to be able to say that she's not a feminist and not come off like an asshole even though it's true. She IS an asshole.
