I'd like to tell everyone a fun little story about Mitt Romney. I live in Massachusetts, and a few years ago, when he was Gov., he oversaw a push to mandate health coverage to all residents of Mass.
He made it illegal not to have insurance. He helped fund and produce the expansion of the current state healthcare for the disabled and unemployed/underemployed by creating Commonwealth Care, which allows people to apply for a low premium healthcare plan. So far, it has worked pretty well, and most of Massachusetts has reasonable healthcare coverage. It doesn't cover abortions. It is extremely popular.
Mitt Romney is a frontrunner in the Republican party for the presidency in 2012. Do you think he'll bring up his ability to oversee the successful and much-lauded expansion of health coverage in his state? I'm pretty sure he will.
What I'm trying to say is: wake the fuck up Dems. If you are fucking us the same way as the Republicans do, you are going to lose a portion of the vote. And while I would never vote for Romney, I know that plenty of moderate Democrats will--they did in Massachusetts when he ran for Governor in one of the most liberal states in America.
Not only do the Dems not seem to care that they are trampling on their core constituency, they are risking their own asses as well. Stupak is as stupak does. #abortion
Did anyone else watch Rachel Maddow last night? One of the congressmen who voted in favor of the bill was on, and he was saying it was "stupid" to get so up in arms about this "one, peripheral issue."
You know what I am fucking sick of? Politicians treating women's rights and women's health as pork. As non-essential. As a tiny bit of legislation.
How dare we risk messing up their bill because of the miniscule little issue of the right to control our own bodies? Why, if we keep fighting this, we'll be to blame for the deaths of every American not currently covered by national health care! Except, actually guys? That's blood on the governments hands for perverting their bill by relegating women to second-class citizenship. #abortion
@BetteD: Rachel inteviewed Ed "Fast Eddie" Rendell (PA Gov) and he indeed used the word "stupid" regarding anyone who wanted to hold up the bill due to the abortion issue. My angry screams were heard in Japan. Stupid? Wow. #abortion
The problem here is that the welfare of women is not considered as central to the welfare of the nation. Therefore, things that benefit primarily women are viewed as "extras" to be used as bargaining chips. Women, in turn, are told to shut up, be glad health reform may pass at all, and put themselves last, as per usual for the entire history of this country.
After all, what kind of selfish, shrewish harpy would object to healthcare reform that benefits so many men and children, just because it tears away a major benefit for themselves?
Women, put your country first, and your own selfish desire for safe, legal, affordable healthcare last! #abortion
I consider this nothing less than a civil rights issue. There is nothing more important to me right now than a woman's right to safe, legal health care. Nothing. Not a single fucking thing. Because allowing half the population become the sacrificial lamb yet again is unworthy of all those who have come before us, and advances none of us. Until women are equally recognized in the health system - and I'm not just talking about reproductive care, I'm talking about the entire gamut of medical issues that affect women - we are being shit on. Again.
I hope everyone doesn't stop writing letters, volunteering, giving money if they are able, showing up for marches, and making themselves heard.
How rich that the RNC provides its employees with abortion coverage. How utterly, utterly rich. #abortion
@bluebears: A woman I love very much is right now ill with cancer. She is neither uninsured nor poor. She still struggles every single fucking day to get what she needs and it still isn't enough.
I don't need any proof other than that to be reminded that women will remain second-class, semi-citizens until our federal government does what it's fucking there to do and ends sexual discrimination, starting with health reform. Putting it up for debate and floating around committees filled with men perfectly happy to SHOUT DOWN their female colleagues when they open their mouths is asinine. #abortion
@SomeAuthorGirl: I'm so sorry to hear that. I recently lost a close family member to cancer, he was also neither uninsured or poor (in fact he had some of the best insurance available) and the out of pocket expenses his family was forced to take on was in excess of 25k, all in just an 18 month period. So I totally sympathize with what your loved one is going through. #abortion
@bluebears: That's one of the biggest problems with our current system. The insured are going into bankruptcy when a family member becomes sick because of caps and insane drug and out of pocket medical costs. It's broken and even this bill does very little to address that. #abortion
@WashingMyHair: which is one of the reasons I think this bill is basically like a tiny band-aid on a gaping bloody wound, so it's even MORE outrageous that womens reproductive rights are being sacrificed. #abortion
@WashingMyHair: This bill doesn't really do much to address costs; it was mostly a coverage bill. I think Ezra Klein addressed this emerging realization well in this blog post:
@SomeAuthorGirl: You make a very good point. Even if you take the abortion argument out of it (which seems to be what every Conservative pushes), women are essentially screwed over by the health care system. Even if you are able to be insured, you have to pay extra for maternity care. Because of one of my female conditions (PCOS) I was denied coverage by one insurer. They actually told me if I wanted to be covered I'd have to get a hysterectomy. I seriously considered saying, "Fine, are you going to pay for it?"
The less money you have, the more incompetent practitioners seem to be. When I was in college I was going to the health services that was operated by the health department on campus for my womanly checkups. I had an abnormal pap smear. Reading online, I found out that a yeast infection can throw them off (and it was documented that I had one when I came in and it was taken care off). They kept treating me like I was essentially a moral defunct person, giving me condoms and a lecture on safe sex. I end up having to go to a gynecologist for a colposcopy (cervical biopsy). The gynecologist found nothing, and no evidence of anything. Even in follow up tests...there was nothing.
@psychgirl1221: I am so sorry that happened to you. It's indicative of what women suffer under the current system, which gives little thought, rhyme, or reason to how women are cared for. Don't apologize for ranting, and never, ever feel like you are alone!
It was maternity care that almost broke me. I am both insured, employed, and by the current definition, firmly middle class. I unfortunately happen to be a woman. #abortion
'You know, I don't need an abortion now, but I'm pretty sure I will in the future and want to pay more money. Sign me up!'
I know people who have had to do the 'Just pray really hard you don't get hurt or sick' because they can't afford health insurance. I know people who practice 'pull and pray' as birth control because they can't afford BC or simply don't want to use it or condoms. Does anyone seriously think people who don't have the foresight to use protection are going to get coverage? That people too ashamed to carry condoms will have the guts to get coverage? That people who get abortions – and the majority of women who get them already have one or more children – can afford extra coverage? No, no and no.
As usual, as always, as ever, people who will need this the most are going to be served by it the least.
And the 'fuck you' to women continues. Let's hope they're going to match this with archaic, bloodthirsty child support laws and bounty hunters, free birth control, amazing financial and emotional support for pregnant women and new mothers, subsidized day care and early education. Otherwise someone might accuse the government of being one-sided! #abortion
I know it would violate all kinds of laws but I would love to find out if anyone on the RNC's health insurance took advantage of their abortions being covered. #abortion
@Bitingpika: Thanks. It goes with the whole "everyone is a whore except me."
It seems like many of the women who chose to have an abortion really care about appearances. They want to still belong with the close-knit group (church, activist group, etc) after they've made their legal choice. Can we really blame someone for hiding their abortion if they do not want to lose the close friends, family members, etc. they've known their whole life?
Do many of them honestly believe that women should not have the right to choose? I certainly hope not. Or is this more of a blame the sin, not the sinner rhetoric?
@lilyHaze: I would never blame a woman for hiding an abortion, but I would blame her if she then returned to her station on the anti-choice picketline. #abortion
@Lilah: That's what I don't understand... Yes, you can think abortions are terrible and wrong, and you can regret and rue the day you ever had one, but YOU HAD THE CHOICE and you don't want any other woman to have that same choice. It is so selfish and deluded. Like Sarah Palin being proud that her daughter MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE or that she CHOSE TO HAVE a Downs' Syndrome baby. Yay, you didn't have an abortion, BUT YOU HAD THAT CHOICE! If you really believe abortions should be outlawed, no, you didn't CHOOSE at all. If you ever considered it even once, you are a HYPOCRITE! Gahh!
(And the "you" is not YOU, just you like all anti-choice hypocrites.)

"Other lawmakers said, in effect, that they voted for the Stupak amendment but didn't really mean it"
What the fucking fuck does that mean? "Oh, I didn't MEAN to strip away your rights ladies! My bad! I was just playing to the more conservative voters, 'cause I know you'll never leave me, because you have no choice! Haha!" #abortion
So it had somehow escaped my attention until yesterday that Stupak is a Democrat. I think at that point I threw my hands up and laid down so the bus could run me over a few more times. #abortion
@cate3710: I felt he same way when I realized it (just a few days ago). When even our "own" won't look out for our reproductive rights, then who will? #abortion
@cate3710: but he is a member of "The Family" the people who live in the C Street house of religious fanatics, I'm surprised they let him in, since he's also Catholic. I thought Evangelicals didn't care for Catholics, what with the pope and all. Either way, his name is mud to me. #abortion
@BadKitty Herself: Bart Stupid claims that he just "rents a room" at the C Street House.
The family isn't just evangelistic, it's more hell bent on world domination. Even Hillary Clinton had ties to the head of The Family and C Street House.
I want to punch Olympia Snowe in the face. She doesn't support real reform, she's playing games to get any bill that passes completely watered down. #nationalwomenslawcenter
It's only a matter of time before bleeding from your bits every month is considered a pre-existing condition. It's so important that women (and men) realize that fighting for reproductive freedom and health care doesn't just mean access to abortion. Picketing Planned Parenthood isn't just going after 'babykillers,' it's an effort to deny women essential services. As usual, men are considered the default, and women are strange others with weird, malfunctioning parts that need smears and tests and check-ups, all 'extras.' #nationalwomenslawcenter
