My Introduction to Diversity professor is not well liked because she is a little cold, doesn't coddle student's, and can be very direct. Most of the student's are startled by a woman who is this way assuming that as our professor and by virtue of her being a woman she should be "nurturing." I absolutely adore my professor because I know that if she we're a male none of the student's would bat an eye lash. They'd just chalk it up to a male teacher being a male teacher. But because it's a woman everyone says shes sooooo mean and sooooo tough. In reality she's just AWESOME! Also she was a Black Panther! #genderbiasbingo

Knowing that this was submitted by a law professor makes me feel like there's got to be a way to incorporate gender bias bingo and gunner bingo.

Top row: Guy who has a personal story relevant to every case; At my Ivy League undergrad ... guy; Every crime is a hate crime! guy. Middle row: Challenges everything the female professor says guy; Everyone but me is unaware of the biological differences between the sexes guy (open space); Starts talking while a female classmate is speaking guy. Bottom row: There's no male bias in caselaw, it's an historical bias, which is okay guy; I'm-not-a-sexist-I'm-a-strict-constructionist guy; There's no such thing as Battered Women's Syndrome guy.

Did I miss anybody? Sorry to all the non-law Jezzies, this will make little sense. #genderbiasbingo

And then there's the guy in the back row, who spent the whole class arguing that "date rape" sexual assault, should always be mitigated into a lesser crime (not a felony!! he argued) because it's not real rape.

@curiousgeorgiana: My Crim Pro class did an entire unit on comparing rape law in different states and countries. I had to sit in front of this dickbag who kept making "funny" comments like "Where's the 'it was charity' section to deal with ugly chicks with hurt feelings" and "How about a 'lying bitch set me up' provision" to his friends. Under his breath of course. The professor would have had him drawn and quartered on the spot. Oh also. Girl sitting right in our section? A survivor.
I never said anything to the professor or the administration. I'll have to take that with me to my grave. I hate having regrets, but if this fuckstick puts one more toe out of line my inner tattle-tale and I will make his life a living hell #genderbiasbingo

My sister is an attorney and recently, the week a female co-worker/attorney returned from maternity leave, the co-worker was told by one of the partners that "there's no way a female with a child could make partner at this firm." She resigned two weeks later. My sister is leaving at the end of the year. The kicker? They specialize in employment law. #genderbiasbingo

@BelleBreezing: Which brings us to "When I make partner guy", because it's still seen by many men as their due, while for women you have to be the one (emphasize one, there are serious quota issues) superlawyer in a million who also does not have children, get fat, rub anyone the wrong way, or sleep for 8 years. And even then, her making partner is seen as proof that the firm is Progressive and Thoughtful, not just an indicator of her merit. Oh, and she will be required to pose in every single recruitment ad until she dies or retires. With a quote about how Progressive and Thoughtful the firm is.

You're preaching to the choir here. I've already joined and left Big Law. #genderbiasbingo

@yvanehtnioj: LOL!!! This is SOO true. My sister (who happens to be 38 and recently married with no kids) and a male started at this firm the same year. He was made partner 2 years ago. My sister is still a Jr. partner and (despite repeatedly asking) hasn't been given stated goals (billable hours, origination) of what she needs to become a partner. And last time it was officially discussed one of the partners mentioned, now that she is married, she probably won't be able to bill as many hours and they needed to take that into consideration. She wants to go into business for herself. Fuck the patriarchy. #genderbiasbingo

At his firm retreat recently one of the partners asked me why I had chosen to work in public service rather than at a firm (omg why would I ever want to use my degree to help those less fortunate and not make 6 figures by spending my entire life at work?!) and I told him I hoped for a better home-work balance because someday we hope to have kids. His response: "Well I'm a partner in the firm and I have 4 kids, so I don't really understand your argument." HIS WIFE DOESN'T WORK. FML. #genderbiasbingo

@yvanehtnioj: A twist on the last one you mentioned: there is no such thing as Battered Women's Syndrome, but men who kill when they are under Extreme Emotional Distress because their wimminz stepped out shouldn't be convicted of murder guy.

Also, if it weren't for this Economy, they would have gotten offers to work in Biglaw this summer, but assume that any of the women who didn't get offers wouldn't have anyway. #genderbiasbingo

I see the way these male partners "parent" - they leave it ALL up to their wives and will miss anything, including birthdays, First Communions, etc. for work. Well, that's your choice. The Chronicle of Higher Ed article makes it sound as though the focus is entirely on bias against mothers, which perturbed me at first, but in fact most of the categories apply to all women in academia. One BIG oversight, however: student bias. As a (small, youngish) female professor, I can tell you that by far the most disturbing gender bias I face is from male students. #genderbiasbingo

@lisbeth-feldspar: I saw this with my female lighting teacher at film school. The woman was a working DP who worked from grunt set work up. She knows how to lug her equipment around but EVERY DAY in class you'd have all the guys trying to take the equipment and carry it for her. You'd get that all the time in any of the equipment heavy classes from the guys. Us women ARE capable of lugging equipment around too you know... #genderbiasbingo

This isn't exactly an example of the leniency bias listed here but it reminded me: I used to work on a call-center floor as one of two women out of about 200 computer tech support phone analysts.

One of the men who worked there also moonlighted at a movie theater and he got about a hundred posters for the Josie and the Pussycats movie, so there were about a hundred of these [www.mp3lyrics.org] staring me in the face all the time. Fine, great, whatever.

But one day I wore a tank top to work. Not a belly-baring one. Just a tank top that covered my bra straps and everything.

I got a talking-to by management. I pointed out the women in the posters, of whom there were FAR more than just me, were wearing a lot less than I was. #genderbiasbingo

@indeedso: Just about as badly as it legally could have. They told me it didn't matter because as far as my clothes I was out of code. Then they made the guys take the posters down (which wasn't what I'd asked for) and magically everyone knew why, so I was "that stupid feminist" who "only wanted to get the posters taken down in the first place." #genderbiasbingo

@indeedso: It was an interesting place, but most of the hostility was not, despite the gender disparity, gender-related.

Other occurrences included me getting reprimanded for following company policy, which I was not allowed to bend, because a customer complained, and also the fun of having the computer company we all were contracted support for coming in, telling us all our jobs were going to India and that if we had *not* done such a good job we would all still *have* jobs (layoffs in order to preserve stock prices, you see), and by the way, had we reserved them a tee time at the local golf course? #genderbiasbingo

@ceejeemcbeegee: Is it that it just doesn't *show* on some people of color, or that they don't blush at all? i.e. do the people who don't appear to blush still get that feeling of a hot rush of blood to the cheeks when embarrassed or nervous (this is what happens to me, but I'm quite fair-skinned so it shows instantly).
