In reply to Joel Stein Warns Us Of "The Urkel Effect"
    Dear Joel Stein:

As a blogging librarian who writes anime slash fanfiction in her spare time and is currently writing this comment on a MacBook named Kouga, after the main character in a tokusatsu drama, I know this: I look forward to the day when my president is complete and utter nerd. Because on that day, I will once again have a president with a functioning brain, and it will be a glorious thing.

Obama is the definition of cool dorkiness. Look at that clip. He's nerdy and ghetto all at the same time. I love it!

The only cartoon character Obama resembles is Oscar Proud: Lookit. And he's a good, loving, protective father of his daughter, so Stein can suck it.

Obama's not a geek, he's a wonk. Urkel is a fictional character. Stefan Urquelle is real and we talk via e-mail.

Dear Mr. Stein, we accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole 20 months in election to save the country, but we think you're crazy to write an essay telling you how nerdy Obama is. You see him as you want to see him... In the simplest terms and the most convenient definitions. But what we found out is that each one of us is a brain...

    ...an athlete...

    ...a basket case...

    ...a princess...

    ...and a criminal...

Does that answer your question?... Sincerely yours, America.

Ha. As the opposition in my country spends a lot of time trying to imply that my Prime Minister is lesbian (her supposedly masculine traits are always invoked), I say arguing over Barack's nerdiness is not only small potatoes, playing into that argument seems kind of slightly offensive, what given the exoticism of blackness in the States and all...

@Vivien Smith-Smythe-Smith: Scholastic is the best!

I just want to take this time to ask for forgiveness from the librarians of Jezebel. As a child I stole BSC books from classroom libraries in elementary school and never returned them. A good majority of the BSC books I own are ones that I did not purchase.

@Jessi Ramsey: Ahem. I was terribly territorial with the BSC and Trixie Belden books. If my mother wouldn't let me get them out, I'd hide part of my stack under the shelves so no one else could get them in the meantime. God only knows why I bothered with Trixie though... I was probably the first/only child to read them since the 70s.

@Vivien Smith-Smythe-Smith: I read Trixie too! Loooooved them. They didn't even HAVE them at our local library anymore though (I read every freakin' book in that young adult section, many more than once). My mom had read the early ones in the 1950's, so when she saw them in a used book store we gradually bought all that they had (mostly with the 70's covers). I also bought some of the newer 80's ones at another local book store. This was in the late 80's to early 90's probably.

(BTW, my little girl is named Beatrix, Trixie for short!)

@applejuice: Oh thank heavens, I thought I was the only one! The ones I had were from the 1950s-60s I think, but the library had the 70s ones as well as the re-released editions with the 50s covers.

I truly ate them up; I pretty much read everything in arms reach, but I was/am a sucker for mysteries. I'm assuming they're still at the library... I was reading them in the mid to late 90s, maybe early noughts?

And Beatrix is such a cool name! I always wanted Trixie and Jim to get together, but they were too chummy (and young I guess) for real romance to ever be on the cards.

@Vivien Smith-Smythe-Smith: Ack! I always wanted them to get together too! I seem to remember slight romance in a couple of the later books, but it never really went anywhere. I was always on the edge of my seat going COME ON!

I read everything in arm's reach too, but I am also a sucker for mysteries! About the same time I was reading these I started to venture up to the adult stacks to check out Agatha Christie for the first time. :) I especially remember loving her short stories as a kid.
