Correct me if I'm wrong, but polygamy is illegal correct, regardless if everyone's of age? and a central tenant of the fundamentalist doctrice?

Also, I thought the Amish made money off of those apple-butter scarfing tourists, and welcome people who come to see them, correct? I've never been there, but I thought that the tours and those space heaters they sell on TV are how they make money?

@judgingnora: Polygamy is illegal as a state issue. I think in the case of the FLDS, men would have one "real" wife, with whom they are married according to the state, and however many wives "sealed" to them in religious ceremony. So, I would suppose that technically under the law, what they are doing isn't illegal. They're just having illegitimate children.

I conducted this tour for myself, on a drive from Vegas to the Grand Canyon. I got dirty looks from residents of the town, and all I did was drive through in my unobtrusive rental car. I can't imagine how poorly received a chartered bus would be.

This doesn't strike me as extraordinarily different from tourist bus tours of Harlem, where white people from red states ogle black folks on 125th street from a chartered coach and disembark only to eat at Sylvia's.

Of course, I find those tours highly suspect as well.

@Beets.Go.On is the Fat Yogini: Oh hell yes. The Sunday tours often come complete with a trip to a local church for some gospel music. The red-staters in their fanny packs treat it like they're going on safari to see lions and giraffes (racist imagery fully intended). SO WRONG.

@BeckySharper: WTF. Of course, I shouldn't be surprised, there's a similar tour in Buenos Aires that a lot of tourists take.

Hilariously, Anthony Bourdain took on one of his shows, and he totally believed he was seeing something authentic that tourists don't.

@Princess Leela: True racism comes in all different shapes, sizes and overt-ness (is that a word, if it isn't I dub it one).

I feel like my own hometown was like this to some extent and the Indian Reservation we lived on the boarder of. Though, we kind of welcomed the gawking because, hello, money and the oil business wasn't being resurrected any time soon.
