Lindbergh was a racist and a bastard but that seems to be whitewashed pretty well.
Amelia Earhart was "a slave to fame" and a "showboater?" Whatever, if she had been a man she would have been described as "focused" and "confident." Bill Gates didn't finish school either. Why was she required to do social work? I'd say her speeches to young women were a pretty important social contribution. Amelia Earhart was a person: a good, adventurous pilot who achieved things despite the gender bias she faced. She also more than likely died serving her country. Isn't all that enough? Why does she have to be a saint?
I prefer my historical figurines to be shown as they are, warts and all, because it doesn't make it seem like greatness is attainable by only a saintly few. When history airbrushes out the seedier side of our heroes, it makes them into caricatures, two-dimensional myths with no real substance, and no real connection to those of us who come after them.
I found the New Yorker profile really fascinating, and it made me realize how little I know about Amelia Earhart. I've definitely bought into the myth and never bothered to learn anything else. Now I want to make my way through all these biographies.
Isn't this kind of a moot point, if it's only being used by flight attendants, and not earthbound employees? Don't flight attendants still have strict weight guidelines they have to meet, or are those days over? Because a size 18, while not gargantuan, is still quite a large woman, larger than I've ever seen working a flight, where size might be a practical issue in cramped quarters.
What I would like to know, however, is if there are flight attendants over size 18. If so, then this needs to be remedied pretty quickly because if the designer doesn't like people above a size 18 then he'll HATE naked people above a size 18, amirite?!?!
But if there aren't any, and I'm saying this because I know that those plane aisles are so damn tiny that you have to be a size 000000 to be able to walk through them comfortably, not to mention in heels and pushing a cart as little kids press the service buttons, and if he chose those numbers based on the sizes of the flight attendants, I think it's less of a problem than it seems. That said, if there aren't any larger attendants and he happened to just pulled those numbers out of his ass, I think it's society speaking again and while it's not an issue fitting-wise for anyone, it most definitely is an issue for our culture as a whole.
On one hand I love a good wrap dress and think they are one of the better styles for a larger woman.
On the other hand, I'm wondering why flight attendants need to dress sexy? It is pretty low cut, you can just hear the drunk businessman now; "oh miss I dropped my iphone can you bend over in front of me and pick it up so I can take a gander at your tits?".
Plus that is a fugly, shiny fabric. Why not a nice non-wrinkle jersey knit? These are work clothes, right?
I'm hesitant to get worked up about this. From what I can tell NWA are the ones with the problem. If it was really an issue, why didn't the Delta union bring it up when the uniforms were phased in three years ago?
I honestly believe that a lot of people who aren't women and aren't in the range of sizes 14-16-18+ have very little comprehension of what a size 16, 18, 20, or 26 looks like. Like this fashion designer, I have an inkling they just think "18? That's huuuuge! We'll make our product up to that size and eeeeveryone will fit! Done."
Being a girl who has fluctuated a lot between these types of sizes, a lot of friends are surprised to learn my size. They think you must be a monster to be an 18 or 24 or whatever, when really we're just Jane Doe on the street. And Jane Doe wants sexy dresses too!
@mass romantic: The linked article used the language "small 18." It implied to me that the 18 in the uniform might be considered a much smaller size if it was off the rack. If their 18 is actually a 12 or 14, it makes sense they'd need to go much larger to provide a reasonable range of sizes.
The sexualization of female-dominated occupations never fails to amaze me. Could a flight attendant in this wrap dress move quickly in the event of an emergency? Probably not, but she'll look darn good as the plane goes down. I don't know that this is better than the hotpants-wearing flight attendant of the 1970s.
Wait, someone wants to hide a certain 'undersirable' sort of person from general view whilst making another more 'desirable' sort of person more prominent? I can't believe something like that would ever happen.
I dunno. I'm a dress size 16 and I wouldn't go near that - that appears to be the most unforgiving fabric for anyone above a size 4. Every tiny bump, dimple and roll would be magnified times ten. Also...it's pretty ugly, like "hey I fashioned a flimsy dollar store picnic tablecloth into a dress!" ugly.
Looking at that picture, have we considered the fact that maybe Richard Tyler is just doing some covert undermining of the 18 and under sized employees? Because that is some ugly fabric.
