Part of me is exasperated at all the very young, white, privileged fashion bloggers that have risen to fame (Cory Kennedy is the obvious, but also Alexi Wasser from imboycrazy.com, and I know there are others whose names/URLs I cannot recall), so am kind of meh about hearing news about Tavi Gevinson.
That said, having just read her blog, she comes across as wide-eyed and adorable- reading her reaction over meeting Chloƫ Sevigny and not meeting Hedi Slimane, she seems as much an excitable fourteen year old as anyone, privilege and extraordinary circumstances notwithstanding, I guess.
@Vivien Smith-Smythe-Smith: What is her privilege, exactly? I've been wondering for a while how she gets her hands on such extraordinary clothing at such a young age. Are her parents in the fashion world?
"1,500 girls lined up on Saturday in New York, and another 1,000 in Los Angeles, to try to be chosen as America's representative to the Ford agency's Supermodel of the World competition"
Haven't they been running that competition for a while now? Like, pre-ANTM days?
@femme-bot: Oh, SMOW's been around forever. But I don't think they held cast-of-thousands ANTM-style free-for-alls on selection day. That is pure reality TV.
Love ya, Forever 21. Where else can I get a whole new cute wardrobe for 100 bucks? And the funny thing is, their stuff is sturdier than Urban Outfitters'.
There is just no reason for Anthropologie's clothes to cost as much as they do. Even if I could afford it, I wouldn't shop there on principle, though I like their stuff.
Is this the part where I bitch about the insufficient range of sizes among most shoe brands? My non-sample-size ass can't take refuge in a pair of beautiful stilettos if two inches of heel is falling off the back of the designer's largest size.
Salma is one of only women in the world who actually looks good in Balenciaga which is funny, considering that they'd never use someone with her curvy figure in their ads.
Sophie Dahl, bless her, cannot write for toffee. She's as twee as a pink thatched cottage with roses round the door.
Assomeone in the Mail's comments pointed out, she's tried to pass off a posh hotel/cookery school as "a little Irish guest house". I wish publishers would actually hire ghosts/editors to make celeb books good.
Meanwhile, out there somewhere is a man or woman who's put in years in the food world, who's got some real experience and expertise, and who won't get a book deal.
Ha, if you think shoes don't pass judgement, you got another thing coming. As someone with size 11 feet, jeans are much easier to find than cute shoes in that size. I eagerly await for the day Cosmo does a shocking expose on the existence of 'plus-size' shoes.
@Deborah2000: My shoes are often mistaken for small watercraft, and my size is one of the easiest to find on sale. My powers are at their greatest at the end of the season, when all the pygmy-footed 8s and 9s have shopped to their hearts' content. Because then the 10s and 11s remain, marked down 50%.
@TatianaTheAnonymousModel: But the steeply discounted size 11s are always giant orthotic granny-boats! Just because I'm paying less than half price for 'em doesn't make 'em pretty.
Then again, I look for shoes from places like Marshalls and Nine West, so we may have vastly different shoe experiences.
I don't know what news is sadder, that Filene's Basement could close or that it may bring DSW down with it. Both are major assets to my shopping habits.
Although Filene's and I are still in a bit of a fight after they closed the one in White Plains, taking the DSW with them, because they didn't want to compete with a Nordstrom Rack moving into the same building. The Nordstrom Rack is awful and Filene's would have blown them out of the water. Hmpf.

ETA: apparently her dad is a 'high-school teacher,' but no comment on what her mum does.

(That is a Weird Al reference, btw.)
