mmmmm... whoopie pies. I used to get these from the Amish market in Annapolis. Pretzel dog + whoopie pie = BEST LUNCH EVER.

My mom mailed me some once when I was in college, and it was the first week of a diet..... which didn't last. lol

Man, I don't know... for Thanksgiving my cousin made pumpkin whoopie pies, and LORD were they amazing. I'm not much of a cake girl, anyways.

i have just lost the better part of an hour thinking about assorted dessert items. I've never had a whoopie pie and I'm very afraid to now because what if it's a bad one?? Also, I had rice pudding last night. It was tasty, but I also have a Trader Joe's Karat cake in the fridge that I've been eyeing up. Just haven't gotten around to shoving it in my face yet.

Also, MOLTEN CHOCOLATE CAKE.

Not to state the obvious, but these look like inside-out cupcakes. Or a cupcake sandwich, marred by the removal of one cupcake's frosting. Which my sister would like, but my son would (rightfully) mock.

Sorry, Paper of Record. I remain firmly on Team Cupcake.

My guess would be that the yeas and nays on this question break down largely among regional lines. I know we New Englanders love the whoopie, but perhaps elsewhere it does not translate so well?

"Whoopie pie" and "cupcake" both have the potential to sound like euphemisms for something dirty, but as far as I'm concerned, the comparison stops there.

My neighborhood bakery/coffee shop, which I frequent with shameful regularity, has had whoopie pies in their pastry case for weeks now (they even sold them in pink-filled pairs for Valentine's Day), but I haven't bitten yet. (I'm too enamored of their salty oat cookies!) I might have to try one today for SXSW fuel....

Where I grew up, these are called "gobs," not like Gob in Arrested Development, but a "gah" sound - just like the sound you make when you eat them. I made some for a party once here in Chicago and everyone went nuts over them.

If you're a doubter, you're on the wrong side. They are truly delicious.

@missbananafish: I lived in the Midwest, and there they were called "gobs." Like "gah-bs", not "gawbs". When I moved to the Northeast, they were 1) called whoopie pies and 2) everywhere.

My bus stop is, incidentally, next to a street called "Gaub Road." Gobdamnit, now I'm hungry.

i was intrigued by the picture until i read this:

'The filling is generally of one of two types: a thick, sweet frosting made from Crisco shortening combined with confectioners' sugar, or, more conveniently, a dollop of Marshmallow Fluff.'

aaaaaaand no... dang. they look tasty, but i cannot abide synthetic white substances masquerading as frosting.
