Mixing the chocolate candy with the raspberry candy in Pippi Longstocking. I keep trying to recreate that and failing.

Pemmican in Swallows and Amazons (my brother and I demanded some, and were very disappointed).

    Mutton in Flambards.

Suppengruen in The Past is Myself.

Nell's doughnut cookies in My Friend Flicka.

Warm bran mashes in Black Beauty (yes, I know it's horse food, but it sounds like tasty horse food).

Despite the racist undertones that I was aware of even at the age of 8, the Bobbsey twins' cook Dinah always made the most delectable picnics. My mom could never figure out why I needed a tall, frothy glass of milk after reading one of their mysteries.

I always loved it when Beverly Clearly described the Quimby's outings at the Whopperburger.

"A soft, juicy hamburger spiced with relish, French fries crisp on the outside and mealy inside, a little paper cup of cole slaw...."

@SmillaSnow: I remember that description PERFECTLY! I think about it whenever I eat french fries.

Remember the oozy-center pancakes, and eating fish with bones, making everyone look thoughtful?

@SmillaSnow: That's one of my favorite scenes in her books, too, because they hadn't been out to dinner in months, and only went that day because they'd been arguing all day and their father wanted a pleasant meal. And then the man across the aisle treated them because they seemed like a nice family! I'm choking up just thinking about it.

    Oh my GOD, duh.

    Martini's in "The Dud Avocado":

"We had dry martinis; great wing-shaped glasses of perfumed fire, tangy as the early morning air."

    I love you, Elaine Dundy.

The barbeque at Twelve Oaks in Gone With The Wind. The Martinis, chicken sandwich, milk, and soup in Frannie and Zooey, the Plover's eggs in Brideshead Revisted, the souffles in The Bonfire of the Vanities, the wine from the leather skins in The Sun Also Rises.

Not a book, but Billy Crystal and his Mallomars, circa When Harry Met Sally. He was right - they ARE the best (commercially-produced) cookie ever made.

The feasts in the Redwall series were amazing. My best friend and I started making scones (this was in a pre-Starbucks world, mind you) after reading the chapter-long descriptions of the HUGE meals.

@merci: So many people bugged Brian Jacques about the food in his books that finally came up with a Redwall cookbook: [www.amazon.com]

I was oddly fascinated by the crawdaddies in The Summer of My German Soldier as a child...and the egg creams in Harriet the Spy

I'm still not sure what either of these are...

@gherkinfiend: Well, that tears it; I finally had to know for myself, because God did I want one because of that book...whatever it was.

"This favorite New York City soda fountain drink has been popular since the 1930s. Egg creams don't contain a speck of egg but are so named because of the froth (resembling beaten egg whites) that crowns the drink. They're made with a mixture of milk and chocolate syrup into which seltzer water is spritzed, causing the mixture to foam enthusiastically."

So it sounds sort of like a chocolate Italian soda.

    I should really get Googling...

@queenieinmanhattan: Oh, and: the Christmas dinner in "Samantha's Christmas Story" was the first full meal I cooked "by myself," heavily assisted by my dad. (And, yes, I'm referring to the American Girl books. They had the recipes in the back.)
