Women need to go see female driven films and not just wait until they are out on DVD.
Movies are expensive to make and to see in the theater. People tend to save their theater going money for the movies with the big explosions, so that's what the studios make. They don't make the same kind of money off rentals and sales so they really don't push to make more classic DVD films to enjoy for years. Transformers 12 will make them more money.
@clevernamehere: That's kind of an unrealistically simplistic attitude, though. What does "female-driven" movies even mean, seriously? Female former studio heads Sherry Lansing and Gail Berman greenlit crap action movies and stupid romcoms; male studio execs, in turn greenlit plenty of wonderful films that constitute food for thought from a feminist POV.
Lest we forget, there are female film editors (such as Mary Sweeney, who edited each and every one of David Lynch's movies since the mid-'80s) and gorgeously talented female directors like Lynn Ramsay, Kimberly Peirce, Jane Campion, Sofia Coppola, Kathryn Bigelow, etc. etc.
If only it were so easy as "go see female-driven movies"!
@snugbug: It isn't simplistic. Money talks. Female studio execs can green light as much crap as male studio execs, but they are all reading the box office returns to see what will do well.
By female driven, I mean from a female perspective. The fact that there are a lot of well respected female film editors doesn't change the fact that more guy centric movies are made because they do better at the box office. And female driven films are more likely to be written, directed and produced by women.
In this case it is even difficult to vote with your $$. If so very few movies are written/directed/produced by women, one would literally have to stay home and wait for Netflix to release it rather than pay at box office.
And still, would "boycotting" movies written/directed/produced by men help get more women into the action?
It could be that studios just keep releasing the boring, safe, mundane storyline movies and/or ones with big name actors and completely ignore all the smaller indie movies.
Anyone in the industry, here, have any suggestions on how to change this dynamic?
With all the lens flares, it looks more like Star Trek 2 -- which I'd kind of love to see what JJ Abrams would do with this poster as his starting point.
I'll say it..... I kind of like it. Plus the desert shades could be symbolic of her.... love life or social life or something (OK, I'm reaching) but I still like it. Sue me.
@Penny: ME TOOOO. I also remember thinking it was odd to pair filmy white jersey with glittery gold pumps, but then everything went black as I was blinded by my shoe lust.
