"The site allowed people to post R.S.V.P.’s, including job titles and salaries... many entries were clearly fictitious ("David" who works in "cougar trading")" - Quote from the NYT article re: the FMF "cheeky" website... RED FLAG if i have ever seen one.
Where better to find a man who will pay for you to be a "tennis mom" than in a dull bar? And what man wouldn't want a woman who only wants him (his wallet) so she can quit her job? Sounds like a good time!
Whenever I confess to being from New Zealand, the only thing people can ever really say to me is that they heard it's beautiful.
I guess it's a valid remark, but it always leaves you kinda standing there awkwardly- I mean, what can you say to that?
@Vivien Smith-Smythe-Smith: I tend to just say, "Yes, it is very beautiful!" but I'll admit it's a strategy that tends to prolong the topic.
It has grown increasingly hard, however, when anyone shares the other frequent observation, "New Zealand? I've always wanted to go there!" to stop myself from replying "Then do it!"
@Jenna: Yeah, I always feel like they're taking an almost accusatory tone when they say it tho (espesh cos I grew up in Taupo, and that's the ONLY nice thing you can say about that place).
I mean, it's like when someone compliments you on yr outfit; what can you do, but say thank you and say something nice about theirs? It's one of those dead-air not-genuine statements, y'know?
Is anyone else seeing the correlation between "smart" girls and "pretty" girls with the woman from Merill Lynch being turned away? What total and utter bullshit.
i really enjoyed this! what awesome writing and observations. i feel really bad for the merill lynch woman and i want to buy her a drink for getting all dolled up.
@applebrown-betty: yeah, I feel bad too, but then again, why would she want to "meet" the type of douchebags she must work with every day? Unless she is interested in finding a more sensitive, creative, artistic soul from the world of fashion? Maybe she should try gallery openings or something...?
Jenna, your description of your encounter with the older banker who encouraged you to see "Bruno" reminds me of every single party my company (a large financial) has ever had. Minus the models, plus about fifty more of the Bruno-recommending guy.
This little tidbit cracked me up --
I soon found myself talking to a Jamaican who'd grown up in Crown Heights about that neighborhood's gentrification, and also the gentrification of Harlem and Fort Greene, a topic in which, as a white resident of Harlem, I am somewhat personally invested. "My friend who lives in Harlem called me the other day, said the neighborhood, it's gone," smiled the man. "He passed a white girl on the street at 2 a.m. and he said she didn't even look scared. That's when you know!"
It reminds me so much of conversations that my best friend and I have had, many a time.
@Office Hussy:
Vodka is distilled and all distilled alcohols are supposed to be gluten-free. Many are made with rye or wheat, so whenever possible (to be on the safe side), I drink Luksusowa Polish Potato Vodka.
If you'll excuse me, I'm now going to go make myself a Vodka Gimlet. A perfect summertime refreshment!
@WashingMyHair: I thought gluten was a protein though, and that protein wouldn't make it into vodka...does enough make it in to trigger a reaction in those with gluten sensitivities? Or is it just a marketing ploy? Like selling no sugar added lettuce?
@virgikneecap: My opinion? I think it's just a marketing ploy. At the same time, I haven't researched this enough to know for sure. Maybe some people are so sensitive that they don't want to take any chances. Thankfully, I haven't noticed that problem, myself, whenever I occasionally drink non-pototo vodka.
Where can I get this no sugar added lettuce from? It sounds great!
@Jenna: ha exactly, 'quick come here, have you seen these shoes? I'm thinking three inches higher and purple to add pizzazz' It would be much more entertaining.
Sad panda for that poor female banker! She is more than invited to my weekly Smart Women Who Are Good At Math party. I'm almost relieved Jenna didn't delve into the sex dynamics, here.
@Trulymadlyme: Sad panda cuz I would NOT be allowed within ten feet of your party. I am mathematically impaired. I can, however, read really fast and retain tons of random facts. I can come?
