"On the bright side (?), Vogue publishing director Tom Florio says "our profits will be up substantially, almost double" even if next year's revenues are flat, thanks to costcutting and layoffs"
This economic crisis has been the best thing to happen to big business since Reagan-era deregulation. Everyone is posting record profits, despite a slower economy. How? Fire half your employees and make the remaining do twice as a much work for a pay decrease! Laugh all the way to the bank.
I wish the teabaggers were right and Obama really was a socialist. #fashionmagazines

Well, if that isn't just American Capitalism in a nutshell. Don't worry about the people that are don't have jobs, the company is getting richer! Yay profits!! #fashionmagazines
@yvanehtnioj: It's a super idiotic thing to say for many reasons, my favorite being the fact that he's essentially saying "Thanks to downsizing, profits will be through the roof!" Downsizing is a one time event. It doesn't like stretch into future quarters. The bump in profit experienced by downsizing can't be replicated ad infinitum, especially given the downward trajectory of ads.
That's like saying "Well, the cancer has spread, but the good thing is I've lost 15 pounds!" #fashionmagazines
@morninggloria: Giant faceless corporations take note: this is what happens when you lay off all of your PR flacks. Someone needs to translate what you're actually thinking (Money money money money money is delishus oh I love money) into words slightly less tone-deaf for the public (We value all of our employees' contributions and regret that the worldwide economic instability ...), else you'll offend the proles, and we'll stop buying your stupid rag.
@yvanehtnioj: I, for one, would love a resurgence of corporate honesty.
Whenever things are good, companies are like "We are experiencing unprecedented prosperity!" and whenever things are bad, like, on the verge of bankruptcy bad, "We are experiencing unprecedented prosperity!"
It makes me think that everyone that anyone says ever is just a line of bullshit. #fashionmagazines
@morninggloria: As someone who was told by her company "We absolutely will not be having layoffs" exactly one month before being laid off, I could not agree more. #fashionmagazines
By costcutting, do they mean that these magazines will openly recycle their content, instead of pretending that the tired lists of "50 New Sex Tricks (Lose Your Gag Reflex Today)" and "45 Ways To Make Him Scream (While Ignoring Your Own Pleasure)" are brand-new? #fashionmagazines
As a product of West Africa (Ghana) , I can honestly say that this is AMAZING. The continent has so much to offer. I only hope that people will begin to realize that Africa is full of beauty!
Just bought the pictured issue of Arise a few weeks ago, and while the pics are lovely I was really taken by other articles. Excited to try to find the other magazines.
As a West African, by way of Nigeria, this makes my heart swell with pride. On the one hand I know this isn't accessible to most, but it simply refreshing to have a representation that doesn't involve voodoo masks and riding elephants.
Take heed designers:, if you want to do an "African" inspired collection BACK AWAY FROM THE ANIMAL SKINS
@Mad May: I hate misuse of ""tribal"" in fashion so much! Some acquaintances of mine are in a band and they wear matching costumes made from West African wax print cotton [which I love, there are lots of shops near me in South London selling it and I spend much time pondering what I can make from it]. They describe them as "tribal". WHAT. I want to smack them with an anthropology/textile history/common sense textbook.
Yes! I saw this @ Style Bubble's blog and I'm so curious! I haven't read any magazine since I was 16 because they bore me to death but I'd love a monthly magazine not only featuring fashion spreads but also geniunly interesting articles!
PLEASE JEZEBEL BUY THIS AND REVIEW IT before I blow my very limited budget on this.
@HeatherNumber1: Oh actually, it'll be good if it's just a couple a year so that way I can definitely afford it.Also less issues a year mostly = better content!
Oh wow, I can't believe I am geniunely excited about a magazine!
@Ri_L: I love fashion mags that show us haute couture because it's far more beautiful & also somewhat artsy than H&M and whatnot. The fashion they mostly print is INSPIRING. It inspires me to try out new sillhouettes & fabrics and I mimic this with stuff I find in thrift stores & it makes me want to make my own clothes (which I do, albeit poorly).
Though I suppose a fashion spread with really cheap things could be very cool as well.
@lafleur: Ooh, sweet! Thanks. Now I'll just have to figure out if they come in my size (and what my size is in their stuff - damn you, confusing breasts!)

I think gentlewomen say "Squee!" It may be considered poor form, however, to "squee and tell."
