It's good to be the queen, shitting on people who don't fit into a carefully constructed vision of the world. Now remember in the award season ahead to laud all the socially conscious actors and actressess who will be swanning on the red carpet in their beloved Prada.
'Surely she ought to recognize that the most important part of a stage production isn't how it looks, but how all the elements come together to make the audience feel something'
Even if it is, surely she's seen enough art to know that it might look as good – or, gasp, even better – with trained non-models.
What a disappointment. At least when Project Runway contestants freak out the week they have to dress non-models they have the excuse of inexperience and, sometimes, lack of skill. Ms. Prada just sounds like a brat.
I kinda want to cry for these actors. With all the rejection, it's so wonderful to be cast (even in a non-speaking/singing role) and then to be fired? Because you're not "hot" enough? I want to give them all a hug.
I'm not saying I agree with Miuccia, but I don't think the issue is not being able to design for non-model bodies. It's an issue of not wanting her designs promoted by non-model bodies (which they certainly would have been, since I'm sure the Met Opera is considering this a PR move partnership). As a publicist, one of the not so fun aspects of my job is the constant reinforcement that every high end brand wants to only be associated with "high end people" - who are inevitably thin.
@EarlyGrey: But surely the stars of the opera won't all have model-thin bodies? She's going to have to make adjustments for them, so I don't really understand why she's upset about the extras.
@EarlyGrey: Then she shouldn't have taken the job. If she wants people that only fit a sample size, then easy, don't even take the job and when the costume designer calls to request some pulls, provide the sample sizes. They only fit the skinny girls - no problems.
But, she does take the job because of some kind of vanity or actual creative desire, and I presume, understands that she is making fresh costumes for a production involving lots of creative input, but she wants everyone to conform to her and not the other way around? The arrogance takes my breath away.
I can only hope that some of the Met's more influential benefactors vote with their dollars on this one.
To be able to only dress one set of measurements? EPIC DESIGNER FAIL! To think, I am a much better costume designer than Prada! Ha ha up your(size 0)s, Miuccia!
Edited to add: seems to me it would have been much easier to re-cast the costume designer than all the actors. The CDs JOB is to dress the actors to reveal character, and suit the STORY and the creative vision of the opera. I am ashamed of the Met that they agreed to this. FAIL FAIL FAIL. Ugh, this enrages me as an actress and a CD.
@BrutallyHonestBabes (aka Mrs. Sarah.of.a.Lesser.Hobbit): The more I look at it, the more I think she had a bunch of mass-produced costumes and got caught having slacked off. The Met should have called her on her Bartleby bullshit and made her design for non-sample size bodies.
I also remember reading somewhere that quite a bit of people in the fashion industry pointed at Prada as the one who popularized the use of only pale, white girls on the runway a few years back. She was probably being unfairly scapegoated, but she has had the whitest runways/ad campaigns for a while now.
@harpy: They did, but as far as race goes, Italy is not known for its tolerance.
Exhibit A: Berlusconi's Obama/suntan comments. Exhibit B: how they treat their African immigrant workers. Honestly, they actually make France look good in this respect, which is hard to do.
