1) One (1) husband, mostly housebroken, slightly used, complete with a really wicked sense of humor and a charming inability to fix anything
2) One week of dinner, prepared by me. BTW--I like pastry!
3) One very cute five year old boy for one day only. He's very honest and will tell you if your shoes look bad. Can be used to pick up unattached men at park (use at your own risk).

Wait, I don't agree. Erm..I don't not agree?
Damn opposite day!

Wouldn't someone in fashion realize that, though???

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and that beholder ain't you.
02/20/09
Beauty is extremely subjective, and I did click through some of the photos in the link you provided. I just see a bunch of very slender 6-foot-tall women with big giant shiny eyes, y'know? That, to me, doesn't register as "unattractive."
For a "pro" in the industry to say, "Oh, those very striking, fit, tall young ladies who have bodies that most women would LOVE to have? Oh, they're simply not good enough! Hahaha, he got stuck with the UGLIEEES!" It's not good for ANY of us, y'know?
You don't have to think that the models are the most beautiful creatures on the planet, but the point here is that it's a lame and hurtful thing to call another human being "ugly". Drastic surgery aside, you can't help the face you're born with.

The point was that the model whose pic is above IS traditionally beautiful. The vast majority or the models in the show have low heavy dark unibrows and very strange faces. Personally I think the fashion industry is crap and the question of whether a woman I have never, and will never meet is attractive is totally irrelevant to me. The point is just that the pic above is not representative of what the look of the majority of the models in the show was.
I imagine they were going for something like edgy, discordant, interesting rather than traditionally beautiful.
But the photo above is misleading.

But I will say HOLY TOKENISM BATMAN for the overwhelming whiteness of his moddlez. One Asian, check; one black, check. Ta da, my show is Diverse!

I guess I wouldn't really get offended if someone called me ugly. I would probably consider myself ugly, and I really good give a shi*. I think the sad thing would be that people would think it matters so much.
I made it clear that the woman who was quoted was a lowlife parasite who feeds off of the insecurities of women and girls all over the world, who sadly think that their appearance is of singular defining importance to their worth in the world. I do not think it matters whether the women are ugly or not. I thought it was kinda off that jez felt the need to include a photo which was not of one of the edgy models but a traditionally beautiful one. I think the models are ugly. I also think some of them are extremely interesting looking, with very expressive faces and totally sexy. But beauty to me is about the ratios of features to each other to create a visually harmonious whole. I guess it seems to me the most irrelevant possible category on which anyone can be judged and therefore not really one which I take personally.

Clever one, that made my day:)

I'll just let Adorno and Harding explain it to you

I get it, you think that they were going for "strong, angular, etc" instead of "pretty pretty princess", but you phrased it poorly. And it's ridiculous (though not uncommon) to call someone by a name with mean-if-not-vicious connotations and then come back and say, "But, *I* don't consider that an insult!"* Especially when the point of the post is how rude / hateful / unnecessary it was for these women to be called ugly!
*See also: slut, bitch, fat.

woodleygaloki=ugly,fat,bitch,slut,mannish etc
It just seems since slutmachine left we are shooting a little low as far as the feminism of this site is concerned.
And I don't think there is anything wrong with suggesting you read a book, if you are actually interested in the subjects you are discussing.

I'm tired of this attitude that a woman being ugly is the worst possible thing that can happen to her since she'll never get a man, and will starve to death after selling her hair to avoid the poor house.
02/20/09
I think the sad thing would be that people would think it matters so much.
This is exactly it--there are many of us here who simply wish that women were no longer judged on their appearances. Me, I'm six feet tall and built like Sasquatch--nobody in their right mind would call me a conventionally pretty little thing. It's taken me a LONG time to be comfortable with the skin I'm in, and to this day I struggle with it.
But just because you don't care if someone is called ugly, doesn't mean that other people don't care about it. Jezebel is a site that takes all kinds, and I know a lot of people here have wrestled with dysmorphia and disordered eating. In a society that constantly insists that portrayals of women must be poreless and slender and perfectly coiffed, it's no surprise that many people have felt ugly, or have been called ugly, and that shit HURTS. If you're overweight or have crooked teeth or bad skin or a big nose, and culture/media/society ONLY glorifies the images of women who are thin and clear-skinned and small-nosed with perfect grins, it's not difficult to feel marginalized. If I can't find a positive representation of something that looks like me, I begin to feel like there's something wrong with me. It doesn't mean that I'm weak-willed or vain or overly obsessed with my appearance. It just means that I'm a social animal that's being socialized, and it's so pervasive in our culture that it affects MANY of us.
I'm honestly glad that appearance-related insults don't bother you in the least; that's a resource that many people wish they had. Should we all have the internal resources to move past that, and not care what people think about our looks? I wish we did. Sticks and stones and all that, etc. But more often than not, if someone calls a person "ugly", they're using it as an excuse to dismiss that ENTIRE person as being somehow useless or unworthy--not just their face.
This is, I think, the reason why it's not completely kosher to call other people ugly here on Jezebel. It's fine that you don't find the models to be the most amazing creatures in the world; that's up to your own personal preference. But when pop culture and society has dealt out mindfucks to so many of us here, "ugly" is still a very loaded word, and it's probably best to avoid it.

This is what I was trying to say. I should just shut up and wait for tscheese.

02/20/09
Gah - now I have to go sterilize my eyes.
/grumbles off to sink
/obvious jealousy

Please make me that ugly for just one day. And a plane with unlimited fuel so I can screw Bale, Owen, Craig, and Mortensen on that day. Or perhaps we could just stick them all in one room and do it all at once? I'm flexible.
Cheers,
