• Iranian officials are now claiming that Esha Momeni, an Iranian American, acted against national security when they arrested her last month in Iran while she was making a documentary of women's activists in the country. • Meanwhile, the Nobel peace laureate Shrin Ebadi says that the Iranian penal code turned women into second-class citizens and uses an "incorrect" interpretation of Islam. • The rise of the internet has stopped many parents from paying taxes on their nannies, which may prove to be more difficult as the economy goes south and nannies require health insurance or get fired and file for unemployment. • Another pregnant woman was rejected from several hospitals in Tokyo, just 11 days before a similar series of rejections caused a pregnant woman to die after giving birth. • The Ministry of Defense is "looking into" allowing women to serve on submarines for the first time in the Royal Navy's history. • Ghada El-Tawli just recently returned to television after she was pulled from her job as an Egyptian anchorwoman after she decided to start wearing a hijab. • Although the risk is low, a new study has found that women with silicone breast implants increase their risk of developing a rare form of lymphoma. •

<![CDATA[ Adorable inter-species adoption strikes...]]> Adorable inter-species adoption strikes again: Jane Etheridge, an Englishwoman from Middleton, says that the lone surviving chick from her hen's recent batch of 14 babes (a fox and untimely death claimed the other 13) was recently adopted by her cat, Snowy. Etheridge says that Snowy cleans and cares for the chick, now named Gladys, and that Gladys loves to play with her adopted dad: "[Gladys] comes in and bounces up and down in front of Snowy and he just stands there and takes it and puts his arm around her," says Etheridge, adding: "They are the best of friends, very much so." We couldn't find photographic evidence of Gladys and Snowy's friendship, but we hope this other cat-chick adoption will suffice. [UPI]

<![CDATA[When Animals Attract: Your Cuddly Childhood Creatures]]> As I've said before, adopting a pet is perhaps the most masochistic thing we humans can do to ourselves. We develop affection, friendship, and unconditional love for our companion animals, all with the knowledge that we will be completely bereft and broken-hearted when we (inevitably) outlive them. But the upside of that total buzzkill (sorry) is that those of us who grew up alongside animals are lucky to have experienced those emotions; through them, we were given the tools to cope with love and loss, specifically, the ability to understand that just because loved ones are out of our lives, the impacts they made remain. So it goes with this month's Past Fashion feature, which focuses on pictures of Jezebel readers and their childhood pets and is jam-packed with warm, fuzzy feelings. (Someone had a kitten named Jezebel! Some of you had farm animals! One girl was lucky enough to have a monkey!) A gallery of the kids and their cute critters, after the jump.
