with reference to the skin lightening stuff in India, while I agree that a lot of that ties into the Indian caste system, but a huge part of is tied in strongly with the concept of 'brown englishmen' etc #brangelinajewelry
@rd2uk: I don't know, I saw skin lightening lotions all over Asia. I think it's just used to be a marker of wealth/beauty, like how it used to be cool to be overweight and pale in the US if you were wealthy and you weren't working all the time.
A side note, my friend was absolutely shocked when we first came across lightening cream, because she was so used to pale being undesirable. #brangelinajewelry
@Heidi Lengdorfer: totally agree with both of you, just saying that in the case of india colonization plays a huuuuge role in people wanting to be lighter skinned/speaking english/wearig western clothes etc. obv theres loads of other factors that play into all of this, such as those that ya'll have mentioned. #brangelinajewelry
I'm sorry but those are some butt-ugly necklaces Angelina. They look like that weird Lord of the Rings themed jewelry section in SkyMall magazines. #brangelinajewelry
Beth Ditto: you are a dearheart, but we REALLY just don't need another celebrity designed 80s inspired line of clothing right now. I don't care that it's plus sized. We don't need it.
@LaComtesse: Can Beth Ditto make a line of totally sane, normal, cute, non-80s plus sized clothing instead? I was over the 80s 20 years ago and I am SO over it now that it's been back for a few years.
...Actually, if she made something 90s-inspired, I would probably singlehandedly keep her in business.
@AthertonMerriweather: They make some sleeky interesting-wash bootcut type ones nowadays - they're not all the tapered-leg Mom-jean Kmart staple anymore.
I've never found a single pair long enough for me, even the "long" sizes, so I'll have to sit this one out.
I clicked on the Glenn Close story expecting some awful outfit - but she looks great! I like the whole 'make do and mend' ethic - if there is a silver lining to the current economic readjustment, it's that more people will maybe start thinking like this, instead of mindlessly buying new stuff all the time.
A gold plated button cannot justify the price of a $990 pair of jeans. Not many people know this, but gold plating is about the cheapest thing you can do, MUCH cheaper than making something solid silver. it literally costs pennies. There better be a much better reason justifying that price tag, like denim was made with crushed-up unicorns in it or something.
That Hermes folding chair had better be able to cart me place to place, change my outfit, get me my soda a la Wall-E AND be made of rainbow essence and pure gold.

Ahem, Jezebel, I believe the worst ad ever was the "naked woman being strangled on a car hood implores you to buy our suits" ad.
