what is more confusing is that they are suing the girl because she "exposed her breasts" which is apparently against the law in a strip club in TX??
apparently the person who assaulted her also gave her a fake ID. which is what they verified her age with. as bizarre as it sounds, i have a childhood friend who's younger sister used to strip at a club 1/2 an hour from her hometown when she was 15 and she had a fake ID. her family only found out because a friend of the father's went to the club and recognized her. totally 'effed up, but true
@EllaEnchanted: I would prefer not to have you speak for me, if it's all the same. Terrible, shameful things have a tendency to happen in all sorts of locations.
@lalaland13: I briefly googled to try to find the reference, but I remember reading in an academic article (either philosophy or law) about a judge who claimed that a four or five year old (whom I believe had been sexually abused - certainly something in that vein) was very flirtatious and provocative. A toddler. And as much as reading that made me want to eat a gun, anyone who does remember the specific case would be appreciated.
@Laulau: Sadly, I doubt that this is such a rare occurance. Once I went to a talk given by some social workers who work with abused children, and one had recently had a case where the abuser was given a light sentence because the six year old sitting in his lap was being provocative and he couldn't help getting aroused.
@MissMoneypenny: I really think that the only appropriate response is to disbar and vomit on the judges who make decisions like that (not necessarily in that order - whichever, really).
@ElleL: I knew a girl in high school who stripped. She lied to her parents, saying that she had a job doing phone surveys that paid in cash based on how many surveys you got completed. But seeing as this girl was kidnapped, I doubt coming up with a lie to tell her parents was necessary.
I imagine this girl couldn't really pass for 22--that the club owners, managers, and patrons suspended disbelief because they were profiting from her exploitation.
I've heard that these outrageous lawsuits are often an insurance thing... Someone always has to be at fault in an insurance claim, so you have to find someone to sue... Something like that. Could that be the case here?
@BeckyIva: That seems likely to me. I think they're covering their asses because the penalty for employing minors is probably losing their liquor license or being shut down by the city.
@BeckySharper: It's just a situation where the legal red tape means you have to file a really ridiculous suit... Reminds me of the woman who had to sue the person who pulled her out from under a burning car.
@BeckyIva: Insurance situations are completely bizarre a lot of the time; I remember (and this was a long time ago, so I'm shaky on some of the details - I was about 10) my great uncle had to get his wife to sue him so that they could get the insurance for some business related problem (it was completely above-board, legally; it was just the only way it was going to work).
@AnnoyingFemaleLeadVoiceover: I'm sorry, am I missing something. The strip club was in Corpus Christi. And I live in Dallas and was unaware we had an unusually large teen-aged prostitution situation...not that having teen-aged prostitutes is every NOT a problem. Is it particularly worse than other cities?
@CalHobbes: I don't know why I thought that the club was in the Dallas area, but yes Dallas does have an unusually large teen-aged prostitution situation due to runaways from troubled homes and parents pimping-out children.
@nex0s: I think they're suing her so that they can get a declaration that they didn't violate state law by hiring her because she's guilty of fraud. So they're trying to pre-empt the inevitable criminal charges if they don't do anything.
@schweppes: That sounds about right. Still, I'm curious if they think this will be taken better by the public because people will think she's somewhat complicit.
What is the difference between 'burlesque' and 'stripping'. Dita von Teese is a fan-favourite around here but is it just because a lot of white girls want to be like her? I've seen her perform (at a charity function) and while she had expensive clothes on, it looked a lot like the strippers who used to perform at the local dive when I was in high school. I've never seen the LGBT performers that the author mentions so maybe I just haven't seen the real thing.

How does one sneak out of the house to strip? What do you tell your parents?
How do you GET THERE?
How does 14 pass for 22?
How does this happen!?
Poor girl.

And--what? They knew that she was abducted and forced to strip, and yet they still have the nerve to sue her, as if her lying wasn't coersed?
