On a first date I never lie and say I like things I don't, and by the time he's got to staying over at my house I'll happily burp all I want because fuck it, that's who I am. If these sad sack excuses for men did this a little bit more often maybe they wouldn't have to fuck 19 year old airheads to prove they still have free will.

Granted it was far from perfect, but in the time of Mad Men, the gender roles were clearly defined. As a man, you were expected to be the patriarch, a leader and provider. You were the backbone of the family. You were the template for your daughter's love interests and your son's ultimate role model.
With women now major players in the workforce, often earing more than her partner and the family no longer soley dependent on the man of the house, some of the power he wielded in his private sphere has been lost. And as the article correctly points out, men are now expected to be sensitive and PC, the complete opposite of Don Draper.
Sadly, their douchy behavior is their attempt to establish a power structure that can never be again.

Most of the douchey things they talk about (paying for sex, ignoring the crying baby, intentionally pissing off your girlfriend) are nothing new. Don Drapper did them too. Its just being selfish, feminism is just a new excuse for them.

What would happen if Maxim threw in a non-sarcastic "How to Make your Girlfriend Happy" article? Would the menz heads explode? Would they actually read it? Are men reading this stuff because there is nothing else out there?

All that "girl power" stuff that enthralled indie/campus culture in the Cobain years may have been eclipsed by dopey Sex and the City-style materialism, but the combination of the two gave women license to be both ballsy and old-school girly (e.g., to have the cool career and the fuck-me pumps). Meanwhile, guys felt not just emasculated but complicit in their own de-ballsing. The sensitive guy's answer to riot-grrrl rock was poetry readings and the Counting Crows, for chrissake.
F*CK THAT SHIT. a backlash against those fantastic values...
