Jeez, girl, they're only trying to do what's best for you and keep you safe. And can you blame them? The guy they just warned you against turned out to be a fan of serial murder and gratuitous violence!
Oh, and that scrunchy is criminal. You should get five years in the slammer for that, at the VERY LEAST.

I hated every strict rules my family placed on me, and I was not even allowed to date, or even talk on the phone without permission. But hurting them didn't cross my mind. If anything, I dreamed about running away or something. What is going on with our teens?

These days you never know.

But remember Charlie Starkweather in the 50's? He and his gal killed her family, and then a bunch more people on a road trip...the movie Badlands is based on that story. Oddly, the GF was in prison for a long time but was able to use the 'my boyfriend influenced/hypnotized me' plea and got out on parole years later.

I'm not saying that the media inspire this, but rather that their coverage of some situations might strike that spark of inspiration in the wrong person, you know?

Kids are very easily influenced by other kids--and by 'famous' people. And once you are on TV, you're famous these days. I've read interviews with a few school shooters who talked about wanting to be on TV. So we've got reality Tv, stuff like Girls Gone Wild and murder we can hold the entertainment industry responsible for. Sigh.

I honestly wonder if it is related to the acceptability of early long day care for under threes. This is the first mass generation that had it. They have just proved that young babies excrete high levels of the stess hormone cortisone, when in care. This alters the brain recepters etc that are still growing. You end up with a kid with a different brain, than otherwise.Preshcool teechers can pick them in first 5 minutes.

If he was loved and nurtured by someone with an intense interest in his well being till 2/1/2 ,plus it is only half day plus Montessori should be ok. If you said 50 hours a week for a 6 week old baby, I would worry. The babies/todlers at home get stessed too, a lot, but the Mum?dad?Nana will keep bringing the level back down. From the babies point of view they are arriving on a new planet they know nothing about and of couse they want their interperator/beloved there as much as possible. I would too. Till they are three they share the mothers spirit, basically. We should focus more on the mothers well being because it transfers.

She is known only as JR because of the young offenders act here. She has a max sentence of 10 years, served in a psych ward. Canada, eh?

Well, a twelve year old who thinks it's ok to date a twenty three year old has clearly got something wrong with her is all I'm going to say. Her name wasn't Lolita, by any chance?!

I don't want to go off on a tirade, but WTF Canada?! Why is it that when women murder and act despicable, they can't possibly be as guilty as the men? They have to be poor, manipulated victims somehow.
Yet, when women get raped and assaulted, they can't possibly be the victims, they have to be partially guilty for the actions of the men ("well, what were you wearing?"). If their case ever makes it to trial at all.
Sometimes the way this country sashays about, acting all progressive and liberal while having all this systemic sexism still be a huge problem makes me want to scream.

I don't really know about the mental illness claim - I'd go with a "she's a little brat who wanted to live her life the way she wanted with no input." But the drugs look like a possibility. I'd go with meth or crack, but I'm being presumptive.

there are the biologically based mood and thought mental illnesses like depression, bipolar, schizophrenia, and there are also the personality didorders which arise largely from poor coping skills developed from environmental stressors, though some biological susceptibility may be involved. personality disorders are damaging to the self and those around them, -- and include sociopathy, which we are probably dealing with here -- but they are not quite the same -- but they don't rise to the same level of illness and disability as mood or thought disorders like schizophrenia. you can't qualify for disability based on a personality disorder. personality disorders are not treated with medication though some symptoms may be so treated, and they are resistant to psychotherapy, some highly so.
mental illness may well be involved, but it is probably not the "serious" illnesses that most think of when they think of mental illness. and yeah, sociopaths are technically mentally ill, but can be also be "bad" people if they act with harm towards others (i had the grave misfortune to become entangled with one, and related to others), and the law accounts for this difference BECAUSE they DO have the capacity, though usually not the desire, to control their behavior or learn ways to do so.

1. Socially isolated groups of teens caused by availability and constant use of 'portable personal communication devices' (cell phones, laptops, social networking sites, etc). They don't talk to older, or younger, generations because they don't HAVE to.
2. Increasingly acceptable violence in our media and games, causing desensitization to violence in adolescents who are the biggest (and most easily influenced) audience.
3. Societal and peer pressure to attain adulthood at a much younger age than ever before (Miley Cyrus, anyone?).
4. Shit. I forgot this point but maybe I'll remember later.
Combine any or all of these with a brain that is wired for lack of compassion and you have a time bomb. Running away, to a person like this, wouldn't be a permanent solution since the family would still exist. Therefore remove them from existence.
Yeah, I'm a teacher and I work with kids every day. Part of me always feel like I HAVE to know what makes teens like this tick, and that part is probably motivated out of self-preservation.
