  • Stephanie Seymour's divorce from Peter Brant is getting even uglier. After police were called to the couple's home following Seymour's complaint that Brant's security assaulted her, Brant has accused the model of drug use and is seeking sole child custody:
  • Brant alleged in court filings that Seymour sought treatment for Vicodin abuse, and subsequently became addicted to the drug Subutex, which is used to treat opiate addiction. He says Seymour has missed multiple court-required breathalyzer tests, and has twice submitted urine samples that, though clean of Subutex, were too cold to meet the minimum valid temperature. The media mogul also says Seymour "broke in" to the couple's Florida mansion and removed $700,000 worth of items, all while the kids sat in a hotel in Connecticut. [NYP]

<![CDATA[Please: Derelicte Is So 2001]]> Ugh: "Homeless Chic" is in. And here's the worst part:

Fashion is often accused of being beyond parody because it does such a good job on its own. Lately, especially. It made waves when Erin Wasson declared that the vagrants in Venice Beach were her fashion inspirations ("The people with the best style, for me, are the people that are the poorest...I'm like, oh my god, you're pulling out like crazy looks. They pulled shit out of like garbage bags") - but it turns out she was prescient! Now, according to the Times, everyone from designer Keanan Duffty to the September W have come out in support of homeless style - never mind that they were probably inspired more by what was clean, warm, and available than the runway trends. And that's in the cases where the muses are not being "inspired" by chic mental illness and substance abuse! Unlike the Bush family, they've apparently never seen Zoolander.

The objections are almost too obvious to enumerate. As when Galliano unleashed his parade of bums in straitjackets, words like "out of touch" and "exploitative" spring to mind with the agility of a tipsy Roberto Cavalli. The solipsism of casting someone else's survival in one's own aggressively superficial terms, on the other hand, nearly defies language. Now, let it be said that while I'm perpetuating the lumping-together of Scott "Sartorialist" Schuman's controversial feature of a homeless man with these other incidents of pov-sploitation, in fact I do see a distinction. Schuman takes thousands of pictures a year, of people whose looks catch his eye, not all of whom are fashionistas but many of whom merely, be design or otherwise, bring something interesting to their outfits. To not have pictured the guy he did would, arguably, have been self-conscious and patronizing. Lots of different people can have style, and Schuman treated him as an individual. This is a crucial distinction.

What struck me most while reading the Times piece was how not merely how out of touch this all feels - but how out of touch it is! If this wave of homeless chic is a nod to the recession, well, what about the fact that homelessness, as we've been told, has a new face? Sure, many people "look" homeless as we understand it. But if anything, the recent financial turmoil has been characterized by the number of middle and working-class casualties, people who might not look "homeless enough" to qualify as a fashion inspiration, but who are also dealing with very real and growing problems of being without jobs and homes. In a sense, this full-scale embrace of the classic "beggar" aesthetic is practically nostalgic: a look back at a time when rich was rich and poor was poor and everyone dressed for his role. Now, the lines are blurred, and for the people actually living the life of these muses, life probably involves a lot of shades of gray - whether or not that's big for Fall.

  • Daphne Guinness, on what tuberose, the principal note in her new perfume, Daphne, reminds her of: "My mother and the flower market in Figueres in Spain and in Cadaqués, where I grew up. We always used to have these huge vats of them, and they would just fill the house with scent all summer long. It reminds me of my childhood. I would collect them and put them all on greaseproof paper with a kind of gel, and then you leave it for a few days. Then you'd scrape off the gel and have a sort of essence. It's quite an ancient plant. <![CDATA[Julia Stiles Mocks Celebrity Fashion Lines, Supermodels]]> Julia Stiles realized she was, like the rest of us, sick to death both of celebrity fashion lines and the willingness of certain bold-faced names to jump on the "green" bandwagon. So she created the awesomely parodic Julia Stiles Styles.

Tagline: "Helping the environment. You're welcome."

Stiles' Styles range from the $340 Ten Shirts I Love About You, a Frankenstein creation lovingly made from ten individual shirts. "I see, so you re-use," says the interviewer. "And then what do you do with the material from the rest of the shirts? Do you make nine more shirts?"

"What?" replies Stiles. "No."

There's also the showstopping $480 Save The Last Shants. Shants, you see, are the first shirt that also doubles as pants. "I was just shooting n Belize and in St. Tropez," explains the actress, "and I met this homeless man who had never owned a shirt in his life. He had taken his pants and worn them as a shirt and I just thought it was so creative, you know? He was just liberated from the conventions of fashion. I got home and it just dawned on me. I thought, 'Of course!'"

  • This June, retailers saw on average a 4.7% decline in comparable sales, supposedly because it was such a rainy, miserably month, nobody felt like shopping — and certainly not for summer clothes.   • Abercrombie alone saw sales tumble 32% on last year. And a lot of companies' spin-off brands — like Abercrombie's now-closed Ruehl — are suffering even worse.   • New York-based fashion chain Scoop, which is being sued for employment violations by 17 ex-staffers, is allegedly behind in its payments to numerous of its creditors, too. "They're unresponsive in their accounts payable department," said Gary Wassner, president of Hildun Corp. "They're not cooperative. They're not providing any financial information to make any kind of analysis of how they're doing. In today's market, it's important to be transparent...Clients are shipping at their own risk."   • Let slip the knock-offs! The Oscar gowns worn by Kate Winslet, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Angelina Jolie will be among those replicated by the notorious inspiration-takers on the design team at prom label Faviana.   • In case you missed that: the bankruptcy a few weeks ago of Ittierre, licensee to John Galliano, Just Cavalli and Versace Sport, among others, has been followed by the bankruptcy of parent company IT Holdings SpA. IT Holdings owns the brands Gianfranco Ferré and Malo, both of which still plan to show and present, respectively, at Milan fashion week. IT Holding's debts total $376 million. [WWD]
  • Mango, the Spanish fast fashion chain, is continuing its pattern of rapid expansion into the US market, even despite the recession. Earlier this month, the company announced what passes for healthy sales figures in the retail sector these days — revenue growth for '08 of 8%. [WWD]

  • Despite the economy, Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé's art collection fetched the highest price of any private collection ever sold when it was put to the hammer in Paris yesterday. The first night of auctions have already raised $264 million. The proceeds will go to Saint Laurent and Bergé's charitable foundation. Record bids were tendered for works by Matisse, Marcel Duchamp, Constantin Brancusi, James Ensor, Piet Mondrian and Giorgio de Chirico. A 1911 painting by Matisse sold for $40.9 million, or double its estimate. Bidding did have to be stopped on a Picasso that failed to meet its 25-30 million Euro estimate, but all in all it seems like the rich people of the world are doing their part for the art market.   • The fashion crowd, on the other hand, needs to learn to do its part and spread a little economic love around at this difficult juncture. Make your coffee at home if you must — I'm straining yesterday's grounds through a sock — but please, please, please, if you are in any kind of financial position to do so, buy something from this season that'll make you feel pretty for years to come.   • Liz Claiborne has signed a long-term agreement with the Hong Kong-based exporter Li & Fung to let them handle Liz Claiborne's global sourcing exclusively. Li & Fung will pay the American retailer up to $83 million for the privilege. [Crain's]
  • That deal to buy the house of Vionnet has gone through. Matteo Marzotto, former chairman of Valentino, and Marni CEO Gianni Castiglioni, joined forces to purchase this bit of prime fashion real estate. Others have tried to revive Vionnet before, never successfully, but the name seems latent with so much promise I can't help but cross my fingers. [WWD]
  • Marzotto's old stomping grounds are seeing layoffs at the New York office. The director of communications and head of men's sales — plus his assistant — were among those to be let go. [WWD]
  • Things continue to stumble along in the retail sector. Yesterday, Nordstrom announced earnings for the 4th quarter of last year dropped by 67.9%; they expect double-digit falls in sales and earnings this year. [WWD]
  • Jaeger, which is privately held and therefore not obligated to release sales or earnings figures, but which does admit its US sales have not met expectations recently, intends to weather the downturn by concentrating on emerging markets like the Middle East and Australia. [Reuters]
  • Just Cavalli has canceled its show at Milan fashion week. The move was expected after its main licensee, Itierre — a division of IT Holdings SpA — was forced to recently file for bankruptcy protection. [WWD]

  • Meanwhile, Italian designers didn't necessarily enhance their fashion-forward quotient by showing an inordinate amount of Obamawear. Did nobody think giant screenprints of the man's face on caftans might be slightly too literal an interpretation of "hope"? [Reuters]
  • The industry, like the country, continues to feel the effects of this recession. Macy's is laying off 4% of its workforce, or some 7,000 people, in company restructuring. [WWD]
  • Liz Claiborne, which owns the brands Mexx, Lucky Brand, Juicy Couture, and Kate Spade, announced plans to cut 725 jobs across the company this morning. That's 8% of its workforce. [Reuters]

  • Uniqlo is faring better than most. Same-store sales climbed 5.7% in January, and it also grew sales through the difficult months of November and December.   • Can you imagine New York Fashion Week taking place at Lincoln Center? The Bryant Park Corporation, which runs the park where the tents have dwelt twice-annually since 1993, has frequently clashed with fashion week organizers IMG, and apparently the $2-3 million it receives in rent from IMG every year is no longer enough to keep BCC happy. It wants the giant tents, the stiletto-clad editors, the sulky models, the hyperactive stylists, the vague celebs, the chattering media, the whole faaaaaabulous lot of us out after the coming September. Lincoln Center is in the middle of its own redevelopment, and I can't imagine designers who are mainly headquartered downtown, in Chelsea, or in the garment district being happy with such a faraway location.   • ABS by Allen Schwatz is rushing production on a $300 knock-off of Michelle Obama's Jason Wu inaugural gown (Wu himself is not producing the one-off dress for sale). Schwartz is also doing a version of Obama's Isabel Toledo sheath, but in ivory, since he thinks women won't buy lemongrass. Which is odd because lemongrass is exactly the kind of color most women would not have considered wearing until we saw the first lady looking so radiant in it. He doesn't give a fig what Jill Biden wears, either, so Reem Acra need not fear a reproduction of the red chiffon sleeveless gown Biden chose for the inauguration. Schwartz has bigger fish to fry, like taking inspiration from what Kate Winslet, Sandra Bullock, and Drew Barrymore wore to the Golden Globes, and guarding against "soft" sales in a market that has seen the designer dresses he copies so heavily discounted that they approach his versions in price.
