Aaaaaaand, once again, Battlestar gets the shaft. I mean, come on. Not to malign some of the other fine nominees, but nothing, I mean NOTHING will beat Edward James Olmos collapsing in sobs upon learning his best friend of 30 years is not who he thought he was, or the stress and pain you can see ETCHED in Mary McDonnell's face as she struggles to SAVE THE HUMAN RACE while she's literally dying from cancer.
Wow, Sarah Palin did a really good job providing Tina Fey some job security. Because, you know, before last fall, Tin Fey's career was almost down the tubes.
The most that the Emmys could deign to nominate TrueBlood for was Outstanding Casting and something to do with the theme sequence (not the song but where they show the cast names and those freaky pics) , and BSG got several nominations for technical stuff. Still a snub though, in my opinion. I won't be watching the Emmys simply because I have watched very few of those shows. It's always the same old same old.
@LikeALady: The cast of True Blood is fantastic--I'm so surprised that only Anna Paquin was well-known before the series. I guess they're like the amazing cast of Friday Night Lights--always doomed to be ignored.
And Rainn Wilson better win this year. That's all I'm saying.
It pains me that It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia wasn't nominated for anything. One of the most consistently funny shows on TV, in my opinion. However, I'm rooting for both Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul, because Breaking Bad was some of the best TV I've seen all year, hands down.
@queenofcarrotflowers: Sunny is painfully due for something (though last season felt a bit inconsistent to me. still awesome, but not quite...as on?)
Particularly Charlie Day who just fricking kills me.
Coco Chanel was nominated? Really? I'm excited for the Audrey Tautou version, but Shirley MacLaine didn't even bother to attempt a french accent. She might be an icon but she didn't do justice to the icon she was portraying.
And Dr. Horrible is nominated! Outstanding Special Class - Short-format Live-Action Entertainment Programs. It's up against the Bruce Springsteen Superbowl halftime show.
Family Guy? Really? Not only has the show been on forever and isn't even remotely original and/or funny anymore, but it's horribly offensive. I never put much stock into the Emmys anyway, but now I put even less.
I can't believe they snubbed So You Think You Can Dance again! Not only is Cat Deeley the most charming and entertaining host in the biz, but SYTYCD is always raising the bar when it comes to creativity and talent and constantly expanding their horizons. I can't be the only person here watching that show, right? There was an incredible group performance of the most insane African dance. Keep in mind that NONE of these guys have ever performed anything like this, and they learned it in about 5 hours.
@Yahtzii: One of my very favorite shows, and Cat Deeley is the best host ever. The amount of talent (not just dancers, but choreographers too) just makes me weep.
@Yahtzii: They pretty much swept the choreography noms at least. I think there was 1 DWTS number. But, yeah Cat Deeley is pretty much the best thing since sliced bread.
OMG! How could they pass Friday Night Lights?? It has the BEST acting. Seriously, anyone who has seen Kyle Chandler and the rest of the cast in that show, knows what I'm talking about. (Grandma Saracen, anyone?).
@Casquivana: Agreed. Gma Saracen gives me goosebumps! FNL is, hands down, the best hour on television, and I would know, I watch a shit ton of television. But, Veronica Mars was always overlooked too, so whaddayagonnado?
@Casquivana: Kyle Chandler is a frigging god. And Matt and Grandma's beautiful and real relationship always gets to me. That entire cast is always cruelly ignored.
Elizabeth Moss apart i hate the lead actress nominations. Hate them. I think Glenn Close's performance is hammy, Holly Hunter is overwrought, Kyra Sedgewick is completely mannered and i don't get the love for law & order svu which bores me to tears. Where were Connie Britton or Elizabeth Mitchell or January Jones (these are off the top of my head but I could probably rant on). I just feel that they rewarded showy and rather empty performances by 'star' names over nuance.
@emilyanne: I think January Jones is REALLY stiff as Betty. I used to think it was a nuanced performance (get it? Housewives are repressed!) but then Anne Dudek's occasional performances as her neighbor just so completely outshine her that I came to realize it as simply bad acting... I love Mad Men and wish it were on the list more, but a big meh to January Jones.
@lobsterswithmittens: I'm undecided - I err on the side of nuance, particularly in some of the later season two scenes, but i do think that you also have a point actually. Hmm I shall give my imaginary January Jones spot to Mary McDonnell instead. Or to Christina Hendriks who I love but who is probably a supporting nomination.
@emilyanne: Connie Britton seconded. Did you see the mother/daughter sex talk with Julie? Amazing! cried. I wanted my virginity back just so I could save it, for God sakes.
@rightfootleft: exactly. It's a brilliant scene, from what remains one of the most moving and intelligent shows on television. I love Friday Night Lights.
@lobsterswithmittens : While I generally think Moss is the strongest among the MAD WO-men (saying a lot since they're all so good), what kills me about January Jones is that when she's on...she's really, really on. Thinking about her scene with Glen in the car from the end of the first season almost gives me goosebumps. And as Betty has gotten a bit more forceful, I think think there has been less nuance. But god, i wanted her to get a nomination for her gradual breakdown in A Night to Remember alone...just...wow.
I do love Anne Dudek too though. Such an underrated actress...and I really miss Amber on House ;p
@emilyanne: I would love to see Christina Hendricks nominated for Best Supporting one of these days. Joan is so fascinating--and yes, the writing's spot-on, but her performance is incredible.
@tankearae: That is my favorite Betty scene: "I'm so sad." I'm in the middle of watching S2 now, I hope there's more Glenn and Betty.
I think every episode gets better the more times you watch it, and the same goes for January's performance. Betty is a complicated character, and I don't think she even realizes what she's thinking or feeling a lot of the time, and January reflects that beautifully.
Agreed. I think the problem for her is that people seem to focus so much on what her body type is doing on TV, rather than her acting -- which is superb.
No nod for Eddie Falco in "Nurse Jackie"?! [Gathers toys, huffs off the playground.]
On the other hand: Go Kathy Griffin! I've grown from being annoyed/scared/offended by this lady to worshiping her. She's one funny and smart cookie, and I want to have her babies. Though I am not sure how that would technically work out.
Anyway. Kathy, is there anything I can machinate on the InterNerd to rig up the Emmy votes and secure a win for you? Call me!
And one of the big Emmy misses fits in this category too---the amazing Mary McDonell playing President Roslin in the late, lamented science fiction epic Galactica.
@Sorcha: I think Skarsgard is super unlucky, not only is he brilliant in True Love, he was fantastic in Generation Kill in a very different role, I'd like to have seen him get a nomination for one of them.
@emilyanne: I've never seen Generation Kill, but i might do it now. I agree, he's fantastic.
I really like how Ryan plays Jason too. It's actually hard to play someone that dumb and that naive while not putting off or frustraiting the audience at the same time. He's actually able to draw us in, IMO. I think he deserves some recognition.

I think the problem with Mad Men is that 99% of the cast is just so damn fantastic, how do you single out individual actors?
I'm happy to see Elizabeth get recognition, though.
