Based on the description and the examples given I have to wonder whether this characterization applies equally to Emilys who aren't white (and therefore frequently incapable of sporting either pigtails or freckles).
Emilys of the world: unite! I'm an Emily Marie - I think there are many of us, and I have always, always loved my name. I go by Em now (another Emily at work beat me to the full version of my name), but I will NEVER grow tired of seeing my name in print :)
By the way, I wore pigtails to school yesterday. I've never had a problem looking young in them, but sometimes they come off as porn-ey. But when the most beautiful man in the world is in your immunology class, porn-ey can be a good them.
When I think of Emily I think of Emily Deschanel and her amazing bone structure. I don't know any other Emily's (though, of course, I don't actually know her either) but she seems pretty awesome. All of her interviews are hilarious and she plays basically the best character on TV right now. Emily FTW.
I heart Emilies. So so much. I have 3 best friends named Emily. When I hear the name, I think sweet, intelligent, loyal, dynamic. It's probably my favorite name because of the joy that Emilies give me. Never met an Emily I didn't like. Gush!
This so describes the Emilies I grew up with. Sweet and cute when they needed to be, but the first to suggest using their mothers' makeup as war paint behind the scenes.
In my 25 years of life I've never met an Emily. I remember it being one of the 10 most popular baby-girl names at one point, and was greatly perplexed as to why I had yet to encounter one in real life. Never me an "Emma", either, though I know that name is very common in Britain.
I'm an Emily. When I was little, Emily was an old lady name. Now that I'm 31, Emily is every other little girl running around. Not too many my age, though.
Hard to judge oneself, but I think I'm just about right for my name based on Anna's observations. Better recognize!
@nourbatta: I'm the tail end of the Emilys before the name exploded. Pretty sure that in the 26 years since I've been alive, Emily has been the top name about 23 times. It's because the name is so awesome.
I KNOW my name will be in this feature (because it's the only common female name starting with that letter) and I'm dreading it a little. I don't really want to hear how my name means I'm secretly a bitch or a prude and how you all know somebody with it who you hate.
I wouldn't say that all the Emilys I know are secretly nasty--and I know quite a few--but they're all unexpected in some way. I know one fabulous and fierce Emily who can be strangely retro at times. I knew another blonde California beauty who seemed perfectly innocent and stereotypical until she started speaking Elvish. My best Emily these days is a jock-turned-academic who knows everything there is to know about saints and Jungian archetypes. I know another who's squeamish and whiny on the one hand, and a totally fearless doctor on the other who talks about bowel movements like she talks about the weather. I don't think I've ever met an Emily who was all surface; they always have layers and unexpected twists. It's a joy to know them, because there's always something weird around the corner!
I have a much younger cousin named Emily who is as sweet as can be. The only other Emily I know is in her forties, and was a manager at my old job. Her's was the mean-girl type of evil, with a tendency to pettiness and a horribly racist streak. Still, I do like the name.
I know only one Emily (actually Emilia) she's very sweet, but I get the impression she never shows her true colours. She's a bit guarded and I don't like that.
