I understand what people are getting at saying that there is some traditionally male-gaze-type jutting of sexual parts, but the overall context is so female to female it feels like a trunk show held in a girl' dorm with champagne flowing like pheromones - can we have a party with that theme?
I wish I could have considered them without knowing the artist was a woman. I do feel that there's a difference not only in the subject selection and positioning but also in the "gaze." But I don't know how much of that I decided before clicking the link, you know?
Without a doubt, I'm considering these differently knowing a woman took them. They're immediately less threatening and any overtones of exploitation are gone for me, which in reality probably isn't accurate. Women, as we know, are some of women's biggest oppressors.
There's a shot several pages in, if you go to the link, of a woman smoking a cigarette and playing the accordian...I basically need it, like yesterday, framed and hung in my room.
I'm not sure if it's because she is a woman more than she is an excellent photographer who knows how to pick interesting, provocative models and get a great performance out of them. That is a gift that separates the photographers from the pornographers and it has nothing to do with sex/gender.
@Beets.Go.On is the Fat Yogini: Yes! I couldn't think of it. I was sitting here looking at these pictures, and even though they are sexy as hell, in a way its also not about the nudity its about the woman.
For instance the one picture of the woman straddling the bed and looking at herself in the hand mirror, that picture would have had a totally different vibe if she was looking seductively at the camera. But its not about the woman engaging the viewer in a sexual way, its about engaging the viewer in a way that we are feeling like we are getting a glimpse into a private/sexy moment in this woman's life and its beautiful and artsy and cool....at least to me.
@BlondeGoddess: Yes, I agree. I've been a fan since her early/mid-90s heyday, and although she hasn't really developed as an artist since then, and the over-exposed thing is a bit dated, there's still something really cute and sexy and fun about her work, especially when she goes retro and adopts a sort of between-the-wars aesthetic. She did a gorgeous shoot with Milla Jovovich for Italian Vogue a few months ago which was blissful.
Venerated old houses like Givenchy shouldn't do diffusion lines. Leave that to the young designers that need the money.
Also, I posed this in groupthink, but it disappeared: a facebook friend (high school classmate I haven't seen in years) posted that she's hosting a "Knock-Off Party with fake Prada, Louis Vuitton, Coach, and more" at her house. Is that legal? Should I be a debbie downer and tell her about child labor and such? #victoriabeckham
Ghosty girl here. Thank you for remembering me so fondly, if not my nationality.. Alas, after our photo shoot I had an epiphany: modeling bores me. To tears. I'm currently pursuing a Ph.D in comparative religion at Oxford, and generally being one happy ghost.

Like the woman in number 6. Her eyes are so expressive. It's a captivating shot.

And oh, Fergie. Did you mean to imply that every other modern scent is stinky? Yours is the only fresh one?
