So Rielle is the pathetic one even though she was single and not breaking vows? Not saying what she did was right, but I think he's the pathetic one for cheating on and humiliating his sick wife. Let's give credit where credit is due.

@saralegal21: i think it is a very narrow view to call only one person in this two-person affair "pathetic" - BOTH are pathetic.

Rielle must accept culpability for actively pursuing and engaging in an affair with a married man (its not like she didn't know he was married)

Edwards must accept culpability not so much for breaking vows (unless you believe in that crap) but for being a coward and being deceiptful; hurting the woman he supposedly loved, his wife.

Both Rielle and Edwards (John) can SUCK IT!

So poor John never would have cheated if he hadn't been "seduced" by Rielle's Hot come on. If Elizabeth thinks people buy that shit then I guess she'll sell a lot of books.

As a gambling woman I would bet that Rielle is not the only outside vag that he's ever dipped into since his marriage.

I used to really like John Edwards.

*sigh*

I know we aren't supposed to care about politician's private lives but I have a hard time forgiving Edwards for a)cheating on his cancer-stricken wife, and b)running for President while knowing that his mistress was pregnant.

It's weird how visceral these feelings are. Not rational at all.

@Cicada: I totally agree. The huz and I were totally in the boat for John the first go round with Kerry, and even into his prez. run this time. However, when we found out about the infidelity thing it made me want to seek him out and tell him how ashamed I was of him personally. COMPLETELY not rational...but I swear if I saw him on the street I'd tell him even now.

She has been through so much, and yet is still plugging away. This is the kind of woman I want my daughter to grow up to be, only I would prefer it if she met and married a man who wasn't going to cheat on her, and perhaps skip contracting cancer.

It sucks that infidelity has become an equalizer of sorts. No matter how many accolades, power, friends or even near-perfect good looks you have, the chances of you getting cheated on is not diminished by much, if at all.

And if that article is right and she also says John never should have run for president, then I say, preach on, Elizabeth. You're exactly right. He risked giving us President McCain or something because oh god if his affair blew up in the general election, I have a bad feeling most of the electorate would ignore McCain's infidelities.

Does anyone else STRONGLY dislike John Edwards now? I know this was a personal situation with his family but the fact that he was so deceitful and cocky (running for Pres. when he had a secret) - doesn't sit well with me. At all.

It takes a special kind of asshole to cheat on his wife while she's recovering from cancer.

I thought one of the worse details about the whole thing was during that interview when he made very sure to point out that he was cheating while Elizabeth was in remission. As if that makes it any better. What a dick.

@victoriasauce: I had always been warned by relatives in NC not to trust John Edwards, because he was a snake. This was repeated to me in various phrasing enough times that by the time he was running for President I had already swallowed enough of the Kool-Aid. But then the news of his affair came out, and while I generally believe that the sex lives of politicians ought to be off-limits, it made me dislike him even more.

@victoriasauce: I always thought that he seemed smarmy. All politicians are to a certain extent, but something about him just seemed SO incredibly false to me, like you could just sense that he was a a little too impressed with himself, a little too cocky. So I was only mildly suprised when the cheating came out, but yes, also really disappointed and angry that yet another asshole with an overblown sense of impunity had to be someone the Democratic party had trusted.

@victoriasauce: He is a serious narcissist to think he could run for the office of leader of the free world and not think his affair would come to light.

@katie.scarlett.o'hara: That was the worst part of it, that he made a point of saying he only cheated when his wife was in remission. That struck me a bit as though he was still hoping it wasn't all over and that that little bit of information would make people forgive him enough to vote for him again.

I was SO disappointed. My bf and I were really excited about his war on poverty and thought it would be great if we actually had a president who cared about those in need. I'm angrier about that than anything, b/c after he left the game, it was almost an admission that other politicians don't have to talk about the poor because it clearly didn't work for Edwards.

I particularly liked it when he said in the ABC interview that "this wasn't my family's fault, it was no one's fault but my own." Uh yeah. We got that already. NO ONE WAS SAYING IT WAS YOUR FAMILY'S FAULT, ASSHOLE. WE ALL KNOW IT WAS YOUR FAULT.

@willwriteforfood: You should just end your sentence with, "He's a serious narcissist to think he could run for the office of leader of the free world." You have to think you're pretty damn great to think you deserve to be president. And damn near all the great presidents had affairs. I pretty much expect it from them. So I would have still voted for him, based on his platform. His personal life really doesn't have any effect on my opinion of him as a public servant. Also, I'm a lifelong resident of North Carolina.

I only hope when this book comes out that the affair isn't the one detail they focus on. It really saddens me that that all her good work has been overshadowed by her husband's public disgrace.
