I just ordered an elephant poo paper journal for my mom's birthday! Huzzah! She's an elephant freak, so I figured this is the next step. I wager she'll never actually write in the journal, just worship it, because it's the closest she'll come to having a pet elephant.

Another thing to keep in mind about herbivore poop: it's mostly just damaged plants. Sure, it has an odor, but it doesn't have the same kind of crazy enzymatic/bacteria action that makes omnivores and carnivores take nasty shits. (I maintain that cat poop is the worst thing on the planet.)

I grew up on a cattle ranch. Herbivore manure is not the worst smell on the planet.

I bought some elephant dung paper at the San Diego zoo. I also got some panda dung paper. I write people letters on it and don't tell them what it is.

The baby elephant is adorable.

Yay for elephants! And seriously, vegetarian animals' poop is SO much better than carnivorous animals' poop. I have a horse and would rather clean up his poop than clean the kitty litter box any day.

@Mafalda para Presidente: Paper is a lot of pulp derived from plant material. Elephant poop is a lot of pulp derived from plant material. It sounded a little squicky to me too at first, but it kind of makes sense. It's like the elephants do all the pulping and processing for you!

@tscheese: @Mafalda para Presidente: Elephant dung, once the dung-y stuff is washed away, is almost pure woody fluff, like a big cotton ball. When I was in Africa, I saw it used everywhere as stuffing for pillows, mulch for gardens, even as a kind of carpeting material for dirt-floored huts.

...and how odd that I get to use this knowledge...

@Mafalda para Presidente: At the San Diego zoo, they sell stationary made from elephant or panda poo. I bought some cute little boxes made of panda poo! It's sort of gross, but it's also the closest I'll get to touching a panda.

Dung-as-mosquito-repellent reminds me of how when I was small and would get chapped lips, my dad would threaten to use chicken poop as chapstick because "At least it would get you to stop licking them and making them worse!"

To this day, I am paranoid about licking my lips when they are chapped.
