That is so sweet! What an amazing lady.
Her grandson made kind of an idiot comment, though -- that 1909-2009 was an amazing time to live through (which is true), but if she'd lived from 1780-1880 nothing important would have changed. Excuse me? The steam engine, railroads, mechanization of almost every industry, the discovery of sepsis, and the emergence of independent democracies, including the US and around the world? Don't diss the long nineteenth century, man!
@morninggloria: Preach. My gramma is in her 70's and still working retail because she doesn't have enough money to retire and recieve adequate medical care (she has a myriad of health problems). She fell off a ladder last year at work and broke her hip. Sigh.
I'm feeling ya, Astrid. My retirement plants involve staying at work into my 70s to pad my account and since women in my family tend to live well into their 90s, I'm not so worried about it.
i don't feel like i will have a choice in this lifetime BUT to work. on the flipside, i don't really mind it. i like having somewhere to go, somewhere to be needed and something to do on a regular basis.
If I am still healthy enough to work at 100, that will be awesome. However, if I am still hauling my ass to a desk job at 100, I will kill myself. I plan to spend my golden years in Miami living with three other gals. I'll do volunteer work and attend fancy parties in sequined outfits.
The mental picture of him sitting on a stool waiting for the cops to come, like she put him on a time-out, is just SO so awesome!
This really reminds me of my Grandma who passed away a year ago. She was totally badass and crazy funny. Thanks Jezebel for promoting awesome women of ALL ages!

Financial planning is boring, but important.

I've heard good things about the Wife site and the book 'A Man is not a Financial Plan' [www.wife.org]
