Ladies, I'm going to put this out there: I really like a clean kitchen. I like a clean apartment. And if my apartment and kitchen aren't clean, it becomes hard for me to do my work. I find it hard to concentrate and to write in a mess.

For me, the kitchen really is the heart of a place, and as much as I love the aesthetics of an old, rough kitchen, I think I would be able to do much better thinking in the new, modern one.

And I'm about to go have a cup of coffee and work on some Ancient Greek on the kitchen table. So there.

True story: When I was in high school I was especially enamored with EVM, and thus told my mom that I was going to get a tattoo of two figs when I turned 18.

Mom: Do you have any idea what figs look like?
NFTU: Um... I think so?
Mom: They look like balls, dear. They look like testicles. Do you really want a tattoo of testicles on your shoulder? Is that the wisest decision.

To this day, I am ink free. But I still feel like if I ever had a daughter I'd name her Vincent.

@Notes from the underwhelmed: I have a friend with fig tattoos...one of the figs is cut open, which actually makes them look very vaginal. I think her tattoo is gorgeous. Of course, this is coming from a girl with a t-bone tattooed on her thigh...so YMMV

Believe it or not: rearranging, cleaning, and remodeling one's living space is considered incredibly cleansing and therapeutic in some religions. In Shinto, for example, cleaning is especially valued. Or the principles of the BaGua in Feng Shui. Whenever I have a massive upheaval, especially in relationships, I clean the house and rearrange it. I donate things I no longer need, and it's hard to explain, but it makes me feel like I've purged unpure things from my life and I feel a buttload better.

@pandorasmittens: I was just telling someone that after my friend-divorce, I did a boyfriend-breakup-style housecleaning, shedding everything that reminded me of her. I still have some way to go, but it's helped a lot.

Of course, I also changed my hair, changed my job, and started a new graduate program. It was a seventeen-year relationship; getting over it has taken a lot of heavy lifting.

um, aren't homes supposed to reflect the personality of the person who lives there? can you imagine, her husband dies, and then her kitchen is completely razed of its charm and instead this post-modern concept kitchen is installed? it's like even her kitchen died. i can't imagine she even wanted to step foot into that kitchen again.

If she did it, I could completely understand that. I'm currently coping with stress by hanging new curtains and replacing the bedspread in our room. I took a carload to Goodwill on Sunday; I feel better already.

Edna St. Vincent Millay, while a fascinating poet, will always remind me of my time in Dramatic Poetry during high school speech competitions. I swear, someone read her poetry in every single round. Her, and Robert Frost.

I adore Edna St. Vincent Millay...she lived an incredibly interesting life. I highly recommend the biography "Savage Beauty" for those that aren't very familiar with her and would like to be.

This is still true. The state of my parents' relationship directly correlates with the amount of remodelling done on the kitchen. Currently, it's a shabby mess. When they make up things will progress.

@JaniceLovejoy fromSA: Whiskey and popcorn: I swear my parents remodel to stay together. The downside is that their house is always in a state of flux - they've put on additions, built new outbuildings, remodeled the additions and the outbuildings, chopped the second floor off and added a new one, redone floors and carpets and paint... it's all a bit of a whirl, really. There is, of course, the teak floor in the dining room that shall be forever known as the floor which nearly killed Dad, but it is lovely.
