This show is rapidly jelling into something great. The only beef I have is Anna Devere Smith is totally being wasted with an over-the-top character that is not being developed.
@Vivelafat says Sweep the leg, Johnny.: yeah, they look like vicodin in their appearance, but if she's an addict, vicodin is not really realistic. oxy is more like it.
I had vicodin when I got my wisdom teeth out and I just slept all the time. Vicodin made me feel like I was having the most perfect day of my life if the most perfect day of my life involved not being able to stay awake for 15 minutes at a time.
@Birthday Girl: Seriously. I can't function or think or stay awake on them. I do not get the appeal unless you are in constant pain and have nowhere else to be but your bed. Kind of hard to think of someone being on them and still on enough to provide medical care to anyone. Also, kind of a tall order to believe that none of her colleagues, who are trained to spot this sort of thing, would miss it in someone they see every day.
@Hooplehead: not at all unrealistic. some people are just predisposed to opiates and they actually give you energy and keep you moving. I was an opiate user for years and performed better at work than off them. (no, really, i did :)-- it wasn't just my own observations of myself). It is quite easy to appear lucid and 'normal' if you are an addict and have a tolerance.
everybody responds differently to stuff-- just cos they make you sleepy doesn't mean that is the way for all.
@margareita metermaid: The first Vicodin I take for whatever affliction I have is quite enjoyable. After that they are like Motrin. I don't think I could become addicted without taking fistfuls at a go.
@Birthday Girl: My ex-roommate had a vicodin addiction (and she was a nurse too). She was up to 20 pills a day. I have no idea how she functioned -- I had vicodin for my wisdom teeth too, and I basically used them so I could sleep with my big jowly post-tooth-removal cheeks.
Awesome; i got to tell my mom about this one and get her off general hospital. this is waaaay better than lucky's vicodin problem. she'll be all over this like she was drugstore cowboy and postcards from the edge. couldn't get her into trainspotting though-- even though it shares the junky theme, it was just too different from the 1970s 80s american junky experience.
I just realized last night who the student nurse reminds me of: my ex-supervisor. I hated that woman and I don't know how this is going to affect my Nurse Jackie watching. The show is awesome though, so I hope over time I'll lose the association.
I actually had a discussion with someone the other day about the most consistent, strong female character* on TV. And there aren't many since women on screen tend to be written with explanations for their "bad" behavior (emotional trauma, etc). But what looks interesting about this show is that its clear that Jackie has some kind of code she sticks with, even if it may be slightly warped from a viewer's perspective. I'm looking forward to watching more of this unfold and hopefully get some insight as to why she does what she does.
*Interestingly, the name that came to mind was Marge Simpson. (Say what you want, but for as many times as she's kicked Homer out and taken him back...she's never wavered from the fact that she's going to do what's best for her family first, despite her own flaws. And besides, she's twice foiled Burns. And her daughters are awesome. I don't care that she's a cartoon, it fits!)
@tankearae: This is why I've always preferred The Closer to a show like Saving Grace (these are just examples, since it's the summer and therefore the season of cable dramas), because Kyra Sedgwick's character is kickass and they don't make apologies for it or put her in the position of someone who needs "saving" or needs to be apologizing for any "bad behavior."
okay, kind of off-topic, but those are some of the tightest scrubs i've ever seen. i grew up around doctors and nurses and i've never known anyone to wear them like that.
@argle-bargle? or fou-ferraw?: I was finding myself marginally impressed they put her in sneakers, as opposed to some type of heel (or worse, heeled sneaker). You make an interesting point about the scrubs...I wonder if it has something to do with the super-short hair and no makeup. If she got lost in her clothes, she might lack the All Important Sex Appeal To Straight Men.
And then what would be the point of having her on TV?*
@argle-bargle? or fou-ferraw?: That's also one of the first things I thought. It's pretty normal for TV shows to alter scrubs to flatter the actors, though. They do that on Grey's Anatomy. They just do it to less of an extreme.
@argle-bargle? or fou-ferraw?: I was actually interested in this show (note: I rarely watch TV) when I first saw the posters, because of the fact that I thought the lead was supposed to be a butch character. I was quite excited.
Then I realized that it wasn't, and that the main plot involved pill addiction. It still seems like a great show, but I can't bring myself to watch it because it hits too close to home for me.
@Zombie MissSkittles: Maybe this show can go in the direction House SHOULD HAVE gone in, rather than the ridiculous, occasionally funny, soap opera it has become. Seasons 1 and 2 were SO good. After that? Blaaaaaaaaah. I don't care about your hot young interns! Be pathetic and sad and angry some more! Remember when House used to have sex with hookers instructing them simply not to talk? Remember when the show focused on his, Cuddy, and Wilson's complexities instead of ZOMG OMAR EPPS AND 13 ARE DOIN' IT! ZZOMG!!! WILL HOUSE AND CUDDY DO IT?!?!
@Zombie MissSkittles: I dunno, I feel like the hook used to pull you in, the medical professional with a drug problem, has little appeal anymore because of how extensively it's been done on House. I haven't watched this (no time for TV anymore), but I'd be willing to give it a shot. I just think you can only take that scenario / problem so far, you know?
I'm getting a little tired of sassy females. Why can't we have entire shows about nice people like Betty Draper and Melanie Hamilton? Those two are my heroines!
