Sometimes Sarah Palin reminds me of an older, less sweet Norelle from ANTM. Norelle, who went to Japan and was excited to meet Japanians and see the birthplace of Panda Express's Chinese cuisine.

One closed-door speech upon which observers cannot agree whether she's intelligent or not does not burnish one's foreign policy credentials. Any world leaders at that conference? Any ambassadors? No? Just a bunch of businesspeople no one's heard of?

It doesn't matter whether she temporarily wins over a bunch of suits in a conference room halfway around the world in a meeting that people still can't decide is a prank or not. They don't vote. And reiterating to people from other countries (all of whom probably have some form of government-funded health care) that the feds will kill your grandma is not the way to sound credible.

The "libertarians" I know LOVE her. One of them actually said to me, "How is Joe Biden any better or more intelligent or better for the country?" It was then I knew I couldn't have an intelligent discussion with that person, and I gave up.

NYT: Mr. Goodé, a New Yorker who said he would never vote for Mrs. Palin, said she acquitted herself well.
"They really prepared her well," he said. "She was articulate and she held her own. I give her credit. They’ve tried to categorize her as not being bright. She’s bright."
I disagree with that. Just because she can read from some VERY carefully prepared notes or a teleprompter doesn't mean she is smart or knowledgeable. After all, she was a sportscaster at a TV station for a while.
On her own, she does not do well at all.

And, really, Palin? Believing in the free market being self correcting and self healing is very 1980's of you. All of the cool kids nowadays know that the collective hysteria of the unregulated market does not equal intelligent market behavior.

Only after a 48-state blowout loss will the republican party be able to purge the crazies & creationists from the ranks and start a rebuild that might actually attract moderates and fiscal conservatives again.

Hmm, the AFP source says "reiterating a previous statement made to the press that the plan would include a bureaucratic "death panel" that would decide who gets assistance, he said."
The NYT says: "She did not repeat her attack from last month that the Obama administration’s health care proposals would create a "death panel" that would allow federal bureaucrats to decide who is "worthy of health care.""
Soooo, death panels or not? Were all these people in the same room?

@wtfox?!: Well, libertarians do usually vote Republican, but their ethos doesn't include no federal government except for when people like loose women, gays, and the coloreds need to be kept in line. They don't really believe it's the place of government to do anything "moral" or intervene at all on the individual level, so they would be pro-choice, ok with gay-marriage, and not support any kind of keeping in line of minorities, though they would also probably thnk it unacceptable to target minority communities for social assistance programs. They seem to vote Republican because despite some very Liberal-ish opinions, it is overwhelmingly MORE important that we have as little government as possible.

I really don't identify with Libertarianism but I have a few friends who have passed through Cato and I don't really think they are all in the same vein as super right-wing Republicans.

@wtfox?!: i've had friends describe themselves as libertarians because they consider themselves socially liberal and fiscally conservative. they vote republican. i'd hate to invoke an "if you're not with us, you're against us" mentality, but when you vote to protect your money instead of the rights of all humans (which you agree they deserve), then you might as well be a conservative all the way.

@wtfox?!: Libertarians theoretically don't care who you have sex with or what happens in your uterus. But, since they are opposed to tax dollars paying for anything, they often end up sounding like the religious right, because their whole deal is if you can't afford birth control and/or raising a kid, you're immoral for having sex because it will result in stealing for someone else. Basically they're the right wing without the charm of occasionally pretending to care about the poor, because Jesus said so.

@SarahMC: Actually, I know a libertarian this last round who did NOT vote for McCain/Palin because he felt they didn't represent true conservative values (he cited the party's adherence to religion and the intrusion of government into marriage and reproductive rights as reasons for swaying his vote). In fact, he feels this way about the entire Republican party.
