Yeah. Because Britain wouldn't want to have one of Europe's most embarassingly high teen pregancy rates.

    Oh, wait.

It's sort of interesting on legal grounds, too: is it legitimate to advertise for surgical procedures? Here in the UK, adverts for prescription drugs are very firmly prohibited, both in print and in broadcast media - it's considered highly unethical to promote medical services and products that way. And yet I see ads for cosmetic surgery clinics all over the place, telling me I can have perfect boobs for summer.

Not that breast enhancement is directly comparable to abortion; far from it. But it does seem like it might be a tricky ethical area, even if the British Medical Association, like myself, does emphatically approve of a woman's right to total reproductive care. Offering services is one thing; actively soliciting for patients might be ethically sticky.

I don't know. Food for thought, I suppose.

I was going up an escalator at a tube station and there was an abortion ad that repeated all. the. way. up. the escalator. I finally started reading it and this woman on an another escalator saw me and shook her head. I've avoided eye contact with Planned Parenthood/smasmortion ads since then.

'Here is a quick medical fix for the consequences of having sex.'

Sure, if you have sex pregnancy might occur and is a consequence of sex. However, I do not understand why a woman should have to remain pregnant because of this. There are consequences to everything we do. When you cross the street you take the chance of getting hit by a car. But no one would ever deny a person medical services. You take the chance of drowning and choking when we eat, but we wouldn't deny them CPR. These are all medical options to activities that we participate in everyday.

I could go on and on but why is it that one must get shamed into suffering the consequences of choosing to have sex. Is it possible only because women are the ones who become pregnant?

@HillGirl needs a job: i agree. additionally, "quick medical fix" makes abortion sound analogous to getting your hair fixed when you accidentally bleach it too long and it turns green.

Because penis enlargement commercials aren't sexy, but abortion? Ooh-la-la. Get me a towel for my seat - nothing sexier than that.

Yes, because I never heard about this sex thing before I saw Trojan and PP ads. And this abortion that they talk about in commercials makes it sound like a lot of fun!

This seems like a very biased article - it keeps using phrase "doctors" as if the whole NHS is up in arms when frankly I doubt the protesters represent even a noticeable minority.

@pond-side-over: I don't see that at all. The article uses "doctor" to denote the fact that Mark Pickering and the CMF are, in fact, medically trained.

You know what encourages promiscuity? The fact that sex is enjoyable. But I'm guessing the Christian Medical Fellowship has a few tips to make sex less enjoyable, at least for women.

Well, I don't really understand why we need TV ads for abortion clinics. I don't see doctors going on TV - "Come in for one vasectomy, and get her tubes tied for free!"

    Stick to the condom ads.

@deeemer: There is a billboard for vasectomy reversal on the highway near my town. "Only 55 miles to the clinic--financing available." As if surgery is an impulse buy.

One thing I think is good here in the UK is the quality of sexual education adverts. The fact is the anti-abortion factions will never be happy with any kind of education about the availability of abortions, I'm sure they would prefer women didn't know where or how to get an abortion, thus forcing them into keeping unwanted pregnancies.

Oh yeah, I'm all for limiting information about legal medical options.

Like, did you know there are these shows that have people out doing dangerous jobs, or acting wildly, or show teenagers roughhousing? Apparently if you're doing ....that, you can get these things called STITCHES if you get cut.

    BUT DON'T TELL.

Yeah. Nothing sexier than a medical procedure done to abort a fetus. Why must the womenfolk be so easily swayed by awesome TV?

    They're nothing but exasperating, irritating,
