I'm curious - why is it at all important to the story that she's a lesbian? Are non-straight people the only ones allowed to break traditional gender roles? Would the story have been different were she straight?

That's not a dig at you, Hortense, I'm just curious why it came up in the original report.

I said something to this effect yesterday, but all female penguins can now rejoice that they are allowed to attend prom in Indiana.

Hi. My name is MorningGloria and I have been drinking since 8 am. The fact that I typed this with minimal typos is an EXTREME point of pride right now. I love Jezebel and I love all of you.

    Thank you for your time.

@morninggloria: After drinking a bottle of wine and going to see Coraline 3-D in Times Square last night, screaming "DON'T GO IN THERE CORALINE! THAT AIN'T YOUR REAL MAMA! SHE WANTS TO SEW BUTTONS ON YOUR EYES! YOUR MAMA GOT BUTTON EYES!" then throwing up in the garbage can IN the theater, I never want to drink again.

@LaComtesse: There is a big party going on upstairs. I am sitting at Boyfriend's computer in his room, which is in the basement of his apartment. And I find myself wishing very hard that I lived in Jezebel land and you were my neighbor or something.

Why would they even ban something like that in the first place? I've always hated dress codes: they basically put a lid on individuality. Some say dress codes are to make students look respectable and so the school looks professional but why does it have to be something so serious? Can't we all enjoy our youth while it lasts...

@Dorotea: This is a stupid ban, but I don't hate dress codes overall. I'm all for individuality, but I also don't think that it's appropriate for teenagers to walk around half-naked in what is still a place for learning. Save it for the weekend.

Something about the word "pantsuit" always make me giggle. I'm glad she didn't take the compromise and fought for her right to wear a tux.

But isn't the famed American right to free speech being breached by the requirement that ALL attendees have to wear "formal" wear anyway?

@Rare Affinity: They are allowed to make a dress code for sponsored events, proven it's appropriate for the event. And when people have tried to sue to get allowed into formal events with jeans and t-shirts, they get shot down fast.

Its so sad they TRIED to enforce an arbitrary dress code rule. My school had a dress code for prom (I'm in Chicago) It basically was that you had to wear formal attire, and you were not to wear anything too revealing or else you would have to wear a school shirt over your dress.

We had people half dressed, women in tux's, and one of my friends went in drag- twice!

Enforcing prom dress code rules = stupid (unless there is tits and ass hangin' out)

I still can't believe they made "no tuxes for girls" a rule in the first place. Seems like most high schools have much more important issues to worry about nowadays.

Good. Why the eff would they stop her in the first place? Cause it isn't lady like? Is this school held in a bomb shelter from 1955?

From the sixties though. There are maybe two tiny window on the second floor, the rest is completely enclosed, and the walls are solid cinderblocks.
