    when I used to be gainfully employed (oh, those were the days...) I would rock the hell out of J. Crew's office-wear. Their suits are really lovely and tailored quite well for the price.

    What I don't understand is how they can sell a fully lined suit jacket and a pair of shoes both at $225.

    Hello, Shorts With Tights. It's been a while. I'm glad you're doing well.

    Look, I know we had some good times - remember when you were forest green suede shorts with mustard herringbone tights? I really, really loved you then. But now, I just - I'm so sorry, but I can't go backwards now. I've seen the photos of us together and in retrospect, it's so obvious we just don't belong together.

    You need someone younger, someone bolder, someone with much, much thinner thighs. And I need someone more mature, more tailored, more...forgiving.

    Please know that a part of me will always love you, and will always look back fondly on our time together.

    I was worried when 'ugly shoes' came up because there are three sets on page 004 that look sort of like Cole Haans from fall 2003 which I already have. The boot shoe things are from Nordstrom circa spring 1980 which I also already had and promptly gave away to my friend in the 8th grade. I think maybe the J Crews don't quite comprehend the shoe thing. They could copy Ferragamo 1950s models instead. Rita Hayworth or Lana Turner or Ava Gardner had some cute Ferragamos. Marilyn too. Would be more amusing.

    cf j.crew's preposterously expensive shit- its been making me lol lately--- all this talk of michelle obama shopping at "affordable" stores ... and they ALWAYS bring up j. crew. Target, i believe. J. Crew? I too have always considered it somewhat aspirational in the price range department.

    @alltheteainchina: As a non-American, living outside the States, I have been looking at the J Crew catalogue in the context of all the raving about Michelle Obama's "affordable" clothes, and wondering if $88 for a cotton skirt is really considered economical over there in the USofA.

    That being said, J. Crew clothes are pretty and if I lived in the States and had enough money, I'd love to be able to do all practically all my clothes shopping there (and at Banana Republic).

    @alltheteainchina: It is affordable at the outlets or when it goes on sale! Half my wardrobe is J. Crew, the majority of it procured on sale from the outlets.

    And I have a bad habit of perusing their wedding section on their website, but half their wedding dresses have pockets! Luckily my mom is an amazing seamstress so I just save pics of the dresses I like. Note: I am not getting married anytime soon, but that is one thing J. Crew absolutely does right. Pockets!

    I am not going to tell one of my bridesmaids that J. Crew's dresses are "curiously small in the bust," as she had to have the top of her dress taken in.

    @la.donna.pietra: Truth. I found a gorgeous green crushed velvet party dress on sale at the outlet, and the only way my C cups were fitting were with my mom doing some imaginative tailoring and a bustier with padded pushup. It looked great after that!

    Alas, we part ways. I love those boots and think they would look smashing with boot cut jeans and one of those fabulous sleeveless tops. However, I do agree that J.Crew does seem to have a bias toward small breasted women. Alas.

    I hate to be the voice of opposition (actually, who am I kidding?) but I think those ruffle shirts are ugly as hell. Unless they're trying to look like extras from Interview With a Vampire*. Seriously, throw on one of those and a velvet coat, and you're Louis.

    * These were the sexy vampires before Twilight. Does anyone remember? ANYONE???

    I was at the J Crew outlet the other day and the salesgirl knocked on my door, asked if I was ok, and I told her, yes, I found some jeans (nice bootcut dark wash ones that I wear all the time). And she said, "Have you tried our matchstick jeans?" I told her "yes and they look terrible on me." She did not respond.
    And the moral of the story is: STOP PUSHING THOSE STUPID JEANS, J CREW.

    I have said it before and I will say it again: The belt as a 'waist defining mechanism' is the single silliest fashion trend of our generation. Belts are meant to hold your pants up. Belts + no pants = silly ridiculousness.

    @BatCat!: My generation used thin belts to define the hip, cross over at the side, and wrao back around the thigh. The waist defining belt seems tame to me.

    @funnyface: As someone who is pretty straight up and down, except for my massive shoulders, I have recently discovered the belt as waist defining mechanism, and I think it is awesomeness. I agree with you, I don't see what's silly about it. It is possible for an item of clothing to be worn for something other than strictly utilitarian purposes.
