I was just saying how much I need a little Bai Ling/Phoebe Price-style crazy in my life right now. Can't believe I kind of agree with something Zoe said. Up is down, etc.

How about actors/actresses learn to work without needing the validation of constant public/peer accolades in the form of elaborate awards ceremonies?

@morninggloria: oh, every field has awards for exceptional talent, i don't fault actors for having them too.

(maybe not every field. I don't know if there is a Best Janitor award. Or Greatest Street Meat vendor)

@TheGuvnah: But their ceremonies aren't so crazy elaborate, is my point. And I think actor/actress awards are not elaborate in proportion to how important actors and actresses are. Like, the Nobel ceremony should be a big deal, because those people actually matter a great deal.

@morninggloria: But it is!! They give the Nobel winners a huge concert and Scarlett Johansen and Michael Caine hosted it this year - it was enthralling and bizarre (and on a TV while I was at the gym).

@sportz.star: Yes, as it should be. But acting awards should be proportionately LESS lavish. Because they're LESS important.

An escape from what, Rachel Zoe? Everyone around you is always wearing clothes that most people cannot afford and going places that normal people cannot possibly go. Awards shows are exclusive parties where everyone is dressed in million dollar gowns and ridiculously expensive jewelry. I see little to no difference.

I heart the Globes, the Oscars' wackier and slightly less predictable sister. I have my fancy snacks bought, the wine chiller at the ready and a clean apartment for my friends to hang out in.

The Zoe is soooo correct. I don't turn on this awards shit for watch Paltrow glide in wearing some eco-friendly, hand-woven burlap gown and espouse shopping thriftily at Whole Foods. I watch for the Ridiculous Extravagant Shit.

She's actually reiterating a real cultural trend. Movies and award shows in the 1930s were filled with diamonds, ball gowns, tuxedos, and impossibly high-class venues in order to distract the public from the harsh realities of the Depression.

It's a tried-and-true cultural reaction to times of societal stress. I'm really looking forward to dresses this year...

I'm not amused either. I want hideous, wildly expensive over-the-top fashion, smugly self-satisfied Hollywood antics, and general out of touch ridiculousness from the Golden Globes. If I want realism, I'll go watch a socially responsible documentary.

a movie is an escape, an awards show is not. i think rachel zoe just puts together random words that she thinks sounds smart and hopes they form a cogent sentence.
