    I have to say, I was really surprised and annoyed by the big hoopla made over Aretha's inauguration hat. That kind of headpiece is such a staple of black church culture that I didn't blink when I saw it. My grandma has a closet full of hats like that, all big and spangled. Something about all of the "tee hee, look at that hat!" nonsense just rubs me the wrong way.

    If she had done that (pre-recorded it), then there'd have been a huge scandal of how she was lip-syncing (a la JHud at the Superbowl) but even when she sang it live, there were still a lot of bickering on how her voice was thin and such. People are just never satisfied.

    Dang... does anyone else get really freaked out and think that a celebrity has died with posts like this (big photo, using names like "Queen of Soul")? I've found out about too many deaths through Jezebel, so now I get a little jilted each time.


    On-topic comment: I may need to go to a craft store this afternoon and pick up supplies to recreate the hat for my dog. She would love it.

    No one else could wear that hat. On Aretha, it just proves how incredibly cool and awesome and fantastic and wonderful and awesome and cool she is.


    Slash, also, I just find it AMAZING to see how a hat could become an iconic part of a historical moment. Seriously.
