    Having lost a relative in a homicide, I can sympathize with the Ruffalo family. We had to delay my cousin's funeral 3 weeks waiting for the cops to finish their investigation (his mother refused to have a funeral without his body), and the case is still unsolved.

    Dina--I don't care that your kid is 21. You are ALWAYS their mom and should ALWAYS emulate a certain level of behavior. Now I'm not saying you can never have a drink with your kid. I'm not saying you can't get drunk with your kid, though that's getting close to the line. Encouraging drunken debauchery is never a good parenting move, no matter how old your kid is.


    Oh Madam Kitt! RIP, darling! Why do we even HAVE that lever?! (Let's see who gets that one...)

    "White Oprah" took hold instantly on the gossip blogs as another sign of this woman's egomania/cluelessness.

    Okay, so I know that Dina is sort of awful and horrible and all that, but why is it so horrible for a 40-something mom to go out and celebrate? Page Six was all "omigawww, so horrible!" but apparently she had a quiet time and left early. (Not that I am defending Dina, because she is not the epitome of good taste and subtlety.)


    There was also a lot of discussion about this topic in a recent Real Housewives thread.


    I think the distinction here is: whether you're a 20-something starlet or a 40-something mom, it's generally considered in poor form to get sick-stumbling drunk and flash wide swaths of your anatomy and act generally tacky.

    @dancerevolution is on the beach, bish.: My 40 year old aunt took me for my "first" drink at a bar on my 19th birthday. We each had a drink and shared some nachos and then she dropped me off for my real bday party, which consisted of many, many more drinks. I don't see the issue unless she ended up dancing on the bar or jumping out of his bday cake or something.

    @ZenScout: Meh, I have had my mother and her friends occasionally take me out for cocktails or give me wine since I was 16 (and oviously I am perfect :P) It wasn't that big a deal, although I will say that my parents are nothing like the Lohans, so that may be part of why it is ok. I think if I were Dina I may be a smidge more careful to condone the clubs and bars, knowing one child couldnt really "handle it" once allowed in.

    Yeah, but aunt versus mom/dad can make all the difference. Maybe my parents are just conservative, but I have a cool aunt who let me drink too. My parents, however, would never do that.

    @tscheese: If I were to guess, I would assume that Page 6's point was that Dinah also alcohol-celebrated w/Linds on her 21st. And look at how that turned out. (rehab, etc)


    Of course, more than that they want to sell headlines and an innocuous story of a mom celebrating her kid's "of age" b-day with him isn't as sensational as "OMG, horrible mother alert!"

    @LaFemme: When my daughter turned 21 we were in a city north of us for a couple of days attending the state music conference. It was her first conference as a music major and she was pretty excited. We stayed in a nice hotel and, for her birthday dinner, went to a fancy restaurant where we ordered pomegranate martinis with our appetizers and I taught her how to read the wine list and choose wisely.


    We've had a couple of follow-up lessons in the past year. Teaching class is an important job for any mom.

    @llamalash: Actually, Lindsay was in rehab on her 21st birthday and the celebration had no alcohol.


    Either way, Dina did NOT take good care of my pretty, pretty girl.
