  • Lily Allen has spoken about her miscarriage, which she describes as "the worst time of my life." She says:

"I couldn't even compute the emotions going through my head, but I was having to put out a press release about my miscarriage... I had this public sympathy for about five days and then everyone was on my case again and I didn't know what was happening to me… I just didn't deal with it at all. I didn't even start beginning to deal with it until the baby's due date. Then it just hit me like a house collapsing. I have therapy on and off but at that time it really helped me. Then I started to deal with it and move on. I still get sad. I still think. I don't mark (what would have been) my baby's birth but it's always there. […] I've had really bad, unbelievably awful times, but if I hadn't had them I wouldn't get the happiness I've got now. I'm very grateful because I could have turned down a very different path. It could have been awful. It really could." [Mirror]

  • Meanwhile, Lily Allen wants to stay with her boyfriend, Sam Cooper, "forever." She says: "We've never had one argument and there's absolutely nothing about him that annoys me. He's not impressed by what I do. I've been with guys and seen them looking in the mirror before they walk out of the door with me. That makes me feel sick because I know it's not just me they're interested in." [Mirror]

I think you end up being a politician responding to polls if you pay too much attention to the Internet. Because it's a quick way to convince yourself that one particular person who happens to be Twittering at the moment just happens to be the authority. You can't be expected to capture the book - what you are expected to do is capture an essence. That's always subjective. It's something that eternally worries me, but at the same time you have to suppress those thoughts. You would be playing a really disjointed character if you were taking everyone's considerations. It's impossible to please everyone. As long as they know that you are working hard, as hard as you can, I think the actual fans of the book accept that and appreciate that." — Kristen Stewart. [Time]

<![CDATA[In Separate Interviews, Chris Brown And Rihanna Open Up About Domestic Violence]]> Last night, both Chris Brown and Rihanna sat down for separate interviews—Brown with Sway of MTV and Rihanna with Diane Sawyer on ABC's20/20—to discuss domestic violence, Brown's assault, and their hopes for the future. Clips after the jump.

In the first part of Sawyer's interview with Rihanna, the singer admits that she and Brown "fell really fast" in love and that "the more in love we became, the more dangerous we became for each other. Equally as dangerous...because, it was a bit of an obsession." The picture of Rihanna's battered face is shown; Rihanna admits that she feels "embarrassed, angry, and humiliated" every time she sees it.

MTV Shows

Brown, meanwhile, says he doesn't know what he was thinking when the attack occurred, and he consistently speaks of the future and "moving past this." He claims that he wants to turn the situation into something positive and to "become the kind of person" he wants to be. He also claims to be "confused" about the public perception. "I mean, I'm human," he explains, saying it hurts when people say negative things about him. He actually seems surprised that people are calling him a "woman beater" and telling him they don't like him. When he apologizes publicly, he says, it's for the fans...and the sponsors.

Sawyer then asked Rihanna if Brown had hit her before that now-infamous night; Rihanna's answer is a bit disturbing, as she admits that yes, Brown shoved her into a wall, but she downplays the act, noting "It wasn't a fight." She also admits that her mother was beaten often by her father. "Domestic violence is not something that people want anybody to know, so, she would just hide it in the house," Rihanna explains, before admitting that she "always said" she'd never date anyone like her father. She also explains why she felt the need to protect Brown after the media explosion, why she temporarily went back to him, and why she eventually left, stating that when she "realized that my selfish decision for love could result into some girl getting killed...I could not, I could not be easy with that part. I couldn't be held responsible for telling them 'go back.' Chris—even if Chris never hit me again—who's to say that their boyfriends won't? Who's to say that they won't kill these girls? These are, these are young girls. I cannot—I just didn't realize how much of an impact I had on these girls' lives until that happen. That was a wake-up call. That was a wake-up call for me, big time."

MTV Shows

Brown says that "anger" triggered him to beat Rihanna, and that he's come to terms with what he's done. "I don't want to be that person," he says. He claims that he "enjoys" his domestic violence classes and that he's learning about making better choices and controlling his anger. "It actually helps you go into dissecting what went wrong," he says.

MTV Shows

After noting that he's received support from several celebrities, Brown notes that his classes have put his "head into perspective and put my head on straight about who I am as a man and who I'm gonna be." Brown's answers are all the same; he's constantly repeating the same sentence, with the words flipped. He focuses everything on himself and his career (he rarely even mentions Rihanna's name) and seems to want to spin things toward the public's inability to forgive him, as if the real tragedy at this point is that people won't move on, even though he has. He fails to recognize, I suppose, that he does not get to decide how the public feels about him at this point, and this actions have consequences that he's still going to have to deal with, whether he wants to or not.

Rihanna claims that she's never listened to the apology song Brown wrote for her, and that Brown's apologies sound like "he's been reading off of a teleprompter." She ends by stating, "I am strong. This happened to me. I didn't cause this. I didn't do it. This happened to me, and it can happen to anybody. And I'm glad it happened to me, 'cause now I can help young girls who are going through it. Don't react off of love. Eff love. Come out of the situation and look at it third-person and for what it really is and then make a decision, because love is so blind."

<![CDATA[Rihanna's Interview, Part Two: "[Chris] Had No Soul In His Eyes"]]> In the second part of her interview with Diane Sawyer, Rihanna reveals that she doesn't hate Chris Brown, and that she hopes he takes his assault on her as an opportunity to "grow up."

As in the first part, Sawyer is in full portentousness mode, and Rihanna herself seems to be struggling to keep her emotions in check. Though she doesn''t blame herself for the attack, she does seem to think that she and Brown were both contributors to a toxic relationship. She says, "the more in love we became, the more dangerous we became for each other — equally as dangerous, because it was a bit of an obsession, almost." She also casts herself as an equal partner in the argument that preceded the abuse, saying, "I couldn't take that he kept lying to me and he couldn't take that I wouldn't drop it." And when she describes the actual violence, she speaks almost as though Brown was possessed by some other entity. "He had no soul in his eyes," she says, and "he was clearly blacked-out."

It may be true that Brown entered some sort of blackout when he began attacking Rihanna, but thinking of it in this way also probably helps her to forgive him — something she seems to have done. When Sawyer asks if she hates him, she replied,

I don't hate him at all, I actually love and care about him and [...] I want him to do well, have a great career, have a great life, and grow up, and just take this as something you had to go through to grow up and learn.

It's a generous statement, coming from someone who was not only abused but then forced to deal publicly with the aftermath of that abuse. It's also a morally complicated one — because abuse is so often trivialized and abusers often excused, it's tempting to cast them as wholly evil people who cannot be redeemed. Rihanna is clearly unwilling to do this — she says Brown was once her "best friend," and clearly she still wants to see some good in him. In a way it's disturbing to see this, because Rihanna doesn't have any responsibility to forgive or think well of Brown. At the same time, it can be hard to hate someone you used to love, and Rihanna's expressing emotions that many other abuse victims have probably felt.

More upsetting is her assessment of the "danger" they posed one another. She may be right that the intensity of their relationship was bad for both of them, but an overly intense relationship doesn't cause abuse. And while she's kind to say that "this" — presumably, the attack and its aftermath — is something Brown "had to go through to grow up," beating someone isn't just a learning experience. It's a crime, and while it's possible that Brown will never hit another woman again, he still deserves more criticism for his act than Rihanna seems willing to give. Again, it's not her job to criticize him for our benefit. But if anything good comes from the public nature of Rihanna's pain, maybe it will be that viewers supply the judgment that Rihanna is unwilling to deliver, and recognize that neither "obsession" nor "black-out" is an excuse for violence.

<![CDATA[Rihanna On Chris Brown: "I Fell In Love With That Person — That's Embarrassing"]]> On today's Good Morning America, Rihanna, who sat down with Diane Sawyer for a 20/20 segment airing tomorrow, offered her advice for young domestic violence victims: "Don't react off of love. Eff love."

This is the pop singer's first big TV interview since the domestic violence episode she very publicly suffered. Sawyer was sympathetic regarding Rihanna's initial decision to go back to Chris Brown, pointing out that it takes a woman an average of seven attempts to leave an abusive partner, to which Rihanna responded "eight or nine actually." One of the saddest parts of the interview was the singer's admission that she still feels ashamed of the violence she suffered. She says, "I fell in love with that person. That's embarrassing. That's embarrassing that that's the type of person that I fell in love with, so far in love, so unconditionally that I went back." And even though she adds that, "It's completely normal to go back. You start lying to yourself," she says she feels guilty about the message her return to Brown sent to her fans.

This is a difficult part of the interview to watch, because Rihanna seems to authentically reproach herself for somehow being a "bad" role model. She says, "I realize that my selfish decision for love could result in some young girl getting killed." It's a big burden to shoulder, especially for someone still recovering from a trauma, and especially for someone who is herself so young. Yet alongside all the people who blamed Rihanna for her own abuse (whom she addresses when she tells Sawyer, "I didn't cause this") were people who demanded that Rihanna stand up as an example of domestic violence victims everywhere and essentially show them what to do. It's a challenge she appears to have taken up, as when she tells young victims "eff love," but it may not be a particularly fair one.

Rihanna got some flack for her recent single "Russian Roulette," which some people feel glorifies violence, and it's clear that, at least for a while to come, she'll be viewed as a Singer Who Is Also an Abuse Victim. It's admirable that she's chosen to turn the violation of her privacy (she talks ruefully about how she felt when her infamous post-abuse photo was released) into an opportunity to help other women, but it doesn't seem entirely just that she's forced to be a role model — and it's especially unfair that she has to feel guilty about what is, as Sawyer points out, sadly normal conduct, just because it took place in the public eye. The job of preventing future domestic violence should fall to law enforcement, to social workers, to trained anti-domestic violence educators, and to parents, who need to raise children to know that abuse is never acceptable. It shouldn't fall to the victims themselves, no matter how famous they are. And while perhaps Rihanna can derive some peace from helping other women, she shouldn't have to struggle with guilt on top of everything else she's been through.

  • In an exclusive interview with Glamour, Rihanna discusses the year she's had: "I went to sleep as Rihanna and woke up as Britney Spears." She also talks about the picture released by cops:

"It was humiliating; that is not a photo you would show to anybody. I felt completely taken advantage of. I felt like people were making it into a fun topic on the Internet, and it's my life. I was disappointed, especially when I found out the photo was [supposedly leaked by] two women." She adds: "Domestic violence is a big secret. No kid goes around and lets people know their parents fight. Teenage girls can't tell their parents that their boyfriend beat them up. You don't dare let your neighbor know that you fight. It's one of the things we [women] will hide, because it's embarrassing. My story was broadcast all over the world for people to see, and they have followed every step of my recovery. The positive thing that has come out of my situation is that people can learn from that. I want to give as much insight as I can to young women, because I feel like I represent a voice that really isn't heard. Now I can help speak for those women." [Glamour]

<![CDATA[Christiane Amanpour To Go It Alone On New CNN Show]]> Diane Sawyer isn't the only TV newswoman getting her own show — Christiane Amanpour is now slated to host a talk show for CNN starting this month.

On "Amanpour," the titular host will talk to political and cultural leaders for a half hour, several times a week. The show begins Sunday, September 27 at 2 p.m. EST.

"The job of evening news anchor is one of the last great solo gigs in broadcast television, along with that of talk show host," says the Observer's Felix Gillette. Diane Sawyer's got the first — and now Christiane Amanpour has the second. Maybe TV news really is turning into a "pink collar ghetto."

Key to both these jobs, in Gillette's estimation, is the word "solo." The right to fill up the TV screen all by themselves is something Peter Jennings and Tom Brokaw took for granted. When Sawyer's agent suggested her as a co-anchor for NBC or ABC news, Jennings said he didn't "go through all the crap" in his career "in order to divide up 22 minutes." Brokaw simply said, "No way. If that happens, I leave." Meanwhile, Sawyer has always worked with others, from "a pack of alpha newsmen" to Barbara Walters. Says Gillette, "No one should appreciate the autonomy of a solo anchor job more than Ms. Sawyer."

Amanpour's appointment isn't as groundbreaking as Sawyer's — plenty of women have hosted talk shows before. But her show will presumably be far from fluffy, showing that news networks are more ready than ever to let women tackle the serious issues of the day — and to do it by themselves. In the coming years, TV news might be one of the few places where women are actually praised for being alone.

<![CDATA[Dan Rather Takes Morning Joe Hosts To Women-In-The-Newsroom School]]> This morning on Morning Joe, Mika Brzezinski said viewers wouldn't accept a woman anchor, Joe Scarborough stammered about double standards, and Dan Rather schooled them both.

Mika Brzezinski seems kind of clueless as she claims that women "get brought to the front of the line many times when they're far too young for it or they're not ready for it." This is relevant to 63-year-old Diane Sawyer how? She goes on to say that a woman in the anchor chair is "still a hard thing for the viewer to accept, I don't know if the viewer would admit that." Rather helpfully explains that this vague Viewer of whom she speaks is likely to be older, and perhaps share the prejudices of a different era. But his best moment comes when Joe Scarborough haltingly speculates that "this culture of America ... tougher on women than men, it seems to me." Rather responds, "It seems to you that way because it is that way." There's hope for the older generation yet!

<![CDATA[The Nightly News: Now That It's Not "Interesting" Women Get To Run It]]> Come January, two of the three big nightly newscasts will be anchored by women. But are women taking over the evening news only as it sinks into irrelevance?

David Hinckley of the New York Daily News gives the media a great big pat on the back for treating Diane Sawyer's upcoming replacement of Charlie Gibson at ABC's World News Tonight "as a news story, not a woman story." He writes,

In matters of gender as in matters of race, the mark of progress is when it's no longer news that a black man plays Major League Baseball or a woman anchors the ABC evening newscast.

So not-news that heads are already talking about whether Sawyer has more or less womanly softness than existing lady-anchor Katie Couric. Ex-ABC correspondent Judy Muller tells the LA Times,

That there was so much emphasis on Katie as the first woman will lessen the scrutiny on Diane, but it still will be there, because Diane has become associated with softer human interest features. Will she have that credibility for anchoring the big events of our lives? If there's one criticism out there, it's that she veers into sentimentality more than other anchors might.

So not-news at Connie Chung is already bristling at the Couric comparisons. She tells TV Newser's Gail Shister that all those predicting a "cat fight" "need to get a life." She also says, "The question should be, 'How will Diane do against Brian [Williams] and Katie?'"

So not-news that the Daily Beast's Rebecca Dana is already calling Sawyer's ascension "the revival of TV news' most delicious rivalry" — between the longtime GMA host and "Couric, who is gamely hanging on as the anchor of the CBS Evening News, is all smiles and warmth and live colonoscopies to Sawyer's dignified cool." No mention of "Brian [Williams]." Does that count as predicting a cat fight?

And so not-news that former ABC and NBC exec Richard Wald says, "You're going to have, for the first time ever, two women competing as solo anchors in a television framework that just - within living memory - sort of destroyed every woman who tried to do it." Sounds like a fun gig, doesn't it?

Sawyer doesn't just have to contend with veiled sexism, overt sexism, the assertion that there is no sexism anymore, and the burden of proving that a woman can anchor the nightly news without getting shitty ratings. She'll have to do all this from an anchor chair that's starting to seem a little like an old paisley couch someone left out on the street. Dana puts it, um, nicely:

It's not the prize it once was, but it's hers: anchor of World News, the once towering, now considerably diminished evening broadcast, which, like its competitors on NBC and CBS, keeps soldiering on in the face of looming irrelevance.

Sweet — looming irrelevance! Time's James Poniewozik thinks it'll be interesting to see how Sawyer's ratings stack up against Couric's, but only insofar as "there are interesting things about the network evening news, which is probably not much the case any more."

Connie Chung says, "I'm sorry this didn't happen earlier, when network news was a lot more dominant." But could it have? Or is the nightly news something women are allowed to dominate only once it's already become unimportant? Bonnie Erbe of US News & World Report says, "I never thought I'd live to see the day when the network newscasts became a pink collar ghetto," and the word "ghetto" may be sadly accurate. With network news drooping in the face of cable and the Internet, maybe women only get to be in charge because it's no fun anymore.

Or maybe that's too pessimistic. The influence of female bloggers is much-lauded and growing, and it's possible that the famed democracy of the Internet is giving women a chance to influence public opinion in a way newscasters no longer can. Joshua Alston of Newsweek says, "people watch the nightly news in order to have the day's stories read to them in a grave voice. That's all." It's a pretty simplistic description of what, for Sawyer, will no doubt be a complex and potentially rewarding job. But at the same time, there's a grain of truth to it — and in an age when "the day's stories" are coming at us 24/7 in a variety of voices both spoken and printed, maybe there's more room for diversity after all.

<![CDATA[Diane Sawyer Vs. Katie Couric: Handicapping The Coming "Catfight"]]> When Diane Sawyer replaces Charlie Gibson as anchor of ABC's World News Tonight, two of the big three nightly newscasts will be headed by women. We know what that means: "catfight" stories all over the media.

So far, coverage of the switchover has been pretty staid — and to be sure, Couric is calling Sawyer "one of the hardest-working people" she knows. But New York Magazine was calling Sawyer and Katie Couric "arch-rivals" back in 2007 (when Sawyer had just lost a bid to anchor Word News Tonight), and the New York Observer even opined that Sawyer was considered for Couric's job at CBS. And not one but two major publications called Sawyer and Couric's 2005 competition for morning-show ratings a "duel at sunrise." It's just a matter of time before the "duel at sundown" stories start rolling in. The Columbia Journalism Review already has some Couric-inspired wardrobe advice for Sawyer. We'll start there with our predictions to help you bet on the knockdown, drag-out bikini-mud-wrestling showdown the nightly news is sure to become.

Katie Couric wore white on her first CBS newscast — a day after Labor Day. And her blazer was supposedly "buttoned in such a way as to make her look chubby." The horror!

Diane Sawyer hasn't worn anything on World News Tonight — yet.

Advantage: Sawyer (for now)

Diane Sawyer is supposedly drunk in this clip from the morning of the Inauguration.

But Katie Couric was getting hopped up on cold medicine (again, supposedly) as early as the New Hampshire primary.

Advantage: Couric, we guess

Katie Couric is famous for her "shapely legs."

Diane Sawyer also has legs. Who knew?

Advantage: only a leg-wrestling match can determine this

Diane Sawyer made Vanity Fair's "New Establishment" Hall of Fame.

Katie Couric didn't. But that's okay, because that old establishment magazine, the New Yorker, called her "darn likable."

Diane Sawyer has interviewed Mel Gibson, Saddam Hussein, and Michael Jackson.

Katie Couric talked to Bill and Hillary Clinton, J.K. Rowling, and Tony Blair. And she got Sarah Palin to reveal that she doesn't know the names of any newspapers.

Advantage: probably Sawyer, but the Palin spots bring Couric darn close

Katie Couric's not doing so well in the ratings these days.

Diane Sawyer's Good Morning America is still second among network morning shows, but Sawyer did get big ratings for a February 20/20 special — on Appalachian poverty, not exactly a well-known crowd-pleaser.

Advantage: Sawyer

Katie Couric was nicknamed "America's Sweetheart."

Diane Sawyer "has been called the Ice Queen."

Advantage: unclear, but certainly not Couric, Sawyer, women, or journalism

Verdict: Neither Couric nor Sawyer is a safe bet in the upcoming Queen-vs.-Sweetheart media-generated catfight. But if you wager that upcoming coverage of their "battle" will include the words "legs," "gravitas," and "diva," you'll probably make some bank.

<![CDATA[Whitney Houston's Comeback Performance Sounded Rough]]> Listening to Whitney Houston today on GMA—her first major live performance in five years—it quickly became apparent that the life she's led is irrevocably inscribed upon her voice. After all, you can't go back and unsmoke a pipe.

Opening with "Million Dollar Bill," Houston's voice sounded thin and scratchy as she struggled to hit notes. Halfway through the song, she kind of even gave up singing. There are reports that ABC digitally "corrected" her performance—which was taped yesterday and aired today—meaning that it was actually worse live.

During an "impromptu" performance of "My Love Is Your Love," Houston's daughter, Bobbi Kristina, came out to sing. Whitney broke into free form, singing, "Me and Bobby's baby! Me and Bobby's baby!"

I miss the way things used to be. (Even though she was easily winded back then, too.)

Diane Sawyer was blunt with Whitney and said in front of a crowd of thousands, "I was worried for you."

She was referring to the last time she saw Houston, which was for a Primetime interview seven years earlier, in which Houston notoriously said, "Crack is whack," and requested to see receipts of her alleged crack purposes. Houston recently taped a lengthy interview with Oprah, that will air in two weeks. Houston claims that her voice had been worn out from answering Oprah's questions for so long.

<![CDATA[Michael's Dermatologist: "To The Best Of My Knowledge, I'm Not The Father"]]> This morning, GMA aired an interview with Dr. Arnold Klein, Michael Jackson's dermatologist (for whom Debbie Rowe once worked). He told Diane Sawyer, "To the best of my knowledge, I'm not the father" of Prince and Paris.

Since Jackson's death, it's been rumored that Dr. Klein — sort of a cross between Larry Flynt and Harvey Pekar — was the sperm donor for his two oldest children. It was a strange way to phrase a denial of those rumors. Klein also told Sawyer that he'd been aware of some of the drugs that Michael was taking, but not to the extent that was later discovered. Klein, who treated Jackson for Lupus and Vitiligo, also remarked on how unhappy he was with plastic surgeons who continued to work on Jackson's face and didn't know when to stop
