@Kilotwat: thanks :)
Also, I'm still a little undecided on whether or not that is Demi's body in this picture. The shoulder pieces and the, erm, krotch pieces look a lot different.
If we, as a society, put half as much thought into issues of war and peace as we did Demi's body, the Ralph Lauren photoshop job, and Sarah freakout Palin, then we would have achieved world peace decades ago.Not a Jezebel slam; everyone's debating it, and that's Jezebel's shop. I enjoy these posts. It just amazes how much folks...care.
Care...meaning these magazine people as well, who think a gorgeous woman just insn't good enough.
That dress looks pretty rigid to me. According to the W link, it's made of metal and leather. So if the dress holds its shape, that could explain it, too. It might even be the exact same one from the runway show. Either way, she's still airbrushed to shit, even in the "original" photo Demi tweeted.
@sayah: It would also explain the way the hips/waist appear off in Demi's picture. The model has her leg back, she is in motion. In Demi's her feet are planted.
Or it's like another commenter suggested, the dress is like a corset.
Demi Moore is pretty skinny, but I always thought she had a very athletic body. Compared to this picture, albeit it was 5 years ago, the dress in the W shot is probably cracking those ribs away.
@cinematheques: There is no amount of dieting that will shrink a ribcage, and hers is evidently much wider in the screencap than on the cover. Demi looks great, why did they do this to her? And secondly, why is she defending it adamantly, even posting an "unretouched" version of this, which is more likely just an unfinished photoshop job?
I don't think they superimposed Demi's head on Anja Rubik's body, however I would not be surprised if they photoshopped her with Anja's runway image in mind. Demi is toned, but she has never been waifish.
This photo isn't retouched at all! Haven't you heard? Partial hip removal is the new weight-loss trend sweeping Hollywood!
All the leading ladies are doing it!
There is absolutely, literally (literally!) no question about whether this image was altered-- it was. The question is, to what extent was it altered. Little things like blotchy skin, shadows, flyaways are always fixed. But a retoucher can obviously take it to that next step where body parts are slimmed, posture is changed, etc.
@lafleur: Ugh, she looks like a bobble head afterward. I much prefer the "frumpy" version that doesn't look like her body was left in the dryer too long.
Like I posted yesterday on the Tweet Beat thread, there are some obvious differences between Demi's "original" and the cover (here are the pics again for reference.. open in two different tabs to click back and forth to see the diff: [i49.tinypic.com][i46.tinypic.com] ). But yeah, I agree that I'm not convinced that her copy was the true, straight-from-the-camera shot. I've seen a lot of before-and-afters and hers just seems to be devoid of all unflattering shadows and the like.
But then again, it very well could be real.I don't think they slimmed her down too much.. she is very, very skinny. And I definitely don't think that the hip was photoshopped. It's not so much the hip in question as it is the connection between the hip and the thigh.. and if she has muscular thighs and she is leaning more to one side, then yeah this is definitely plausible.
It will be interesting to see where this goes. The only thing I hate about this is that so many websites have called this "the worst photoshop job of all time" and things like that. Come ON, even past RALPH LAUREN? No way. I would love to see them eat their words.

Luckily for ya'll I found the original, unphotoshopped picture so that we can clear this whole mess up.
