Forever was the most educational book I ever read. Without it I would never have understood most of Flowers in the Attic.

And since it's banned book week, I think I will pull out my copy, with all the good parts highlighted, that I stole from my sister when I was in 6th grade and give it a read this weekend.

I have a...friend who tried all that "We must, we must, we must increase our bust" stuff in Are you there, God? It's me, Margaret and just waited & waited, but nothing happened there either. Where are my, I mean, her boobs, Judy?? Maybe someone isn't as clear a writer as she thinks she is.

I remember reading Deenie when I was eight or nine and having no idea what she was talking about.

It still kind of shocks me, though, when women admit they don't, not because they aren't interested, but because women aren't supposed to. Until fairly recently, it never even came up in girl porn, at least not that by American authors (I'd see it in Australian ones). It seemed much more palatable to these female characters to lie awake at night in desperate longing. That was never really my style. I had enough problems with insomnia without adding intractable sexual frustration to the mix.

@TheFormerJuneBronson: I remember reading it and realizing that OH MY GOD other people--other girls--did that too! I wasn't the only one! It was a weird combination of relief, shame, and bewilderment.

@CroutonShield: When the Prince song "Darling Nikki" came out, the line about "masturbating with a magazine" I pictured Nikki getting off with a rolled up magazine (dildo style) Only recently did it occur to me that the magazine was porn.

I was very young then.....

Does anyone remember one of the 'Superfudge' books when the big brother gets all pissy with one of his friends for 'using' his special kind of rock or something? I still have no clue whether it was another 'special place'-like euphemism.

@zorazero: Yes! Jimmy Fargo was mad at Peter, so he "used" his special rock in the park. I didn't know what he was talking about for the longest. Now, I think maybe he just peed on it.

@zorazero: I remember the distinction was between just sitting on it and "really using it," and it made perfect sense to me when I was ten or eleven. Now, I have no idea what it was supposed to mean!

I formulated a hypothesis to try and make my brain let it go, and that hypothesis was: maybe they, like, humped the rocks? Because 'really using it"....what the hell else could that mean except something weirdly masturbatory?
