How the hell did you pull this off, Tracie? I love it. It reminds me why I read Jezebel. But yeah, if one studies the histories of political and cultural movements there's often a point where a movement splinters into a thousand different interpretations and leaves many people confused and somewhat lost.
I think asking women not to have opinions of what other women do or say is beyond stupid. I kind of agree with what Debra Dickerson says about the pole dancing, sex blogging and drunk photos on Facebook. That doesn't further the causes of women, it's just another exuse for men to call us drunk sluts and take no interest in what we're actually saying about the causes that concern us. It's sad that women have to temper their behaviour in order to get respect and to be taken seriously, but it's kind of a necessity. It's sad that it's ok for men to get as drunk as they like and say whatever stupid shit that they want and that they are still taken seriously despite that, but I really want Feminism to mean more than being able to do whatever stupid shit men do. We're not equal yet and I feel that the more negative behaviours that some women partake in and attribute to feminism is damaging.
@BiBiVirtue: I get drunk and do/say whatever I damn well please. If people won't take me seriously because of my occasional good time then they, quite frankly, can fellate themselves as far as I'm concerned. Judgey people like that have no place in my life. This is not to say that I throw naked pyramid parties or anything like that, but that I feel no pressure to conform to any man's idea of what I should be, as a woman, because if they don't like it, they can walk away.
@Cunning_Linguist: Fair enough. I appreciate your candor and freedoms, but please don't think I am asking for a return to what men think we should be. I have my own idea of what a woman is and what a woman should be and this is only in my opinion. It worries me that to some Feminism means naked pyramid parties because I think that it does and should mean more than that. I just don't think we've gone far enough and there are more than enough judgey people who do matter otherwise we wouldn't STILL be earning less than men. I think we all need to aim higher.
@BiBiVirtue: Yes, but how dare you voice anything but support for intoxication, STDs, and wild behavior?
I love that the people speaking out in favor of the "diverse voices of feminism" (which apparently encompasses suffragettes and sluts) leap to stifle the lone dissenting voice.
@DCDeva: No, I think the point is to stop judging how each woman acts out her brand of feminism. None of us would judge how this commenter acts out her own interpretation, it's the fact that she is saying how other feminists should act. I am not sure why people keep missing this point.
I always love these, though now my crack brain is demanding "Ladyblogwars: THE MUSICAL" because if there's anything more appropriate than Judge Judy weighing in on internecine feminist blog "war," it's setting it to a musical accompaniment and seeing who can dance to the Fosse-inspired set piece with feminine hygiene product art.
This is most excellent, Tracie. Just like any social movement, feminism grows and changes as people join and its ranks swell. Anything else would be artificial and, well, absolute bullcrap.
