Why don't Republican congressmembers just come out and say it: They don't care about women (Do I need Kanye here to back me up?). They don't care if we have 1 child or 20, because they'll find a way to weasel out of helping us care for them anyway. They don't care if we die in back alleys. They don't care if the babies have birth defects (which we wouldn't know about if we don't have the health insurance to pay for pre-natal care), just as long as we don't abort those babies. They don't care about women except the ones they married or raised.
Fucking fuckers. Mitch McConnell and John Kyl can kiss my ass.
OK, I've got a serious nerd-crush on Senator Stabenow. This and her putting the smack down on Senator Kyl about maternity care?! She's my hero. Can we please have more women in Congress (and men for that matter) who will stand up for women's issues? I mean, there are more women than men in this country (about 4.5 million more, if you believe the Census Bureau), it's about time that legislation start reflecting that fact. I'm getting all fired up over here!
You will note that people who want to restrict this funding are not willing to restrict funding to programs that allow access to erectile dysfunction medication... And Olympia Snowe (R, Maine) voted against her party so she deserves a shout-out.
So not only do we have Orrin Hatch not wanting insurance to cover abortion services, but we've got John Kyl saying insurance shouldn't have to cover prenatal/maternity services? Does not compute. These people are idiots. And Debbie Stabenow is now on my "Awesome List".
@envirodesigner: Definitely. The phrase should be something like, "Orrin your Hatch." As in, "This dude came over last night and tried to Orrin my Hatch," meaning when the guy pretends he's going for your vadge but sticks it in your ass instead. I'm open to other suggestions.
@amusezvous: good but i should reflect more of the whole hypocrisy of the thing. Sure he wants to go in my hatch but won't do anything afterwards. But, i dunno I'm still brainstorming it.
@amusezvous: Just to add some extra hypocrisy i would change the situation a little. He pretends that he is going for your vadge but sticks it in your boyfriend's ass instead, then leaves brochures about the evilness of homosexual activity on your night stands when he leaves.
I called Mitch McConnell (my senator) today and told his phone-answering person that as a former intern in that very office, a former Republican and a lifelong Kentuckian, I did not want to see women's health options restricted. I called at the urging of the message I received after donating to Planned Parenthood today. I wanted them to know there are pro-choice people in Kentucky, because I know the anti-choicers are vocal. And I hope someone stops to think about the fact that a 30 year old woman who spent her very early 20s working in conservative politics (before the party went all Bush and Cheney on me) is concerned enough about women's healthcare to call up her recalcitrant GOP Senator and give his office an earful about healthcare reform.
@Flackette Goes Retro: Very cool! I always *want* to call up my representatives, but I never know what I'd actually say. I tend to get tongue-tied when frustrated.
@serreca: it's very easy and i encourage you to do it. A staffer will answer and you simply say where you live and what you want your rep to do (support repro health in health reform/ vote against the Hatch amendment, whatever, be as specific or nonspecific as you want) and they will say thank you and hang up. easy peasy!
@serreca: I've actually campaigned at my state's capital. When you get there and you're speaking with them, the anger and the passion that you have for your cause makes you so eloquent. It's like an out of body experience.
Y'know what Senator Kyl? Your prostate issues, coronary bypass, diabetes, gout, cancer and erectile dysfunction will probably cost your insurer more money than any pregnancy I might have, so maybe insurers shouldn't cover those things either.
(P.S. As far as I know Senator Kyl doesn't have any of those diseases/problems, I just tried to think of old dude medical problems.)
A worth while health care bill will not get passed in the Senate, these maybe our elected officials but they do not work for us. Our Senators ran for Senate not to help they're constituents but to help themselves, public service isn't what it used to be. John Kyl says that he doesn't need maternity care therefore it is unnecessary, the bottom line is he has great health insurance and he can't relate to the less fortunate, and never plans to. This is not a democracy for the people anymore, it is capitalism at it's most fine tuned.
An abortion is so much cheaper than maternity care, not to mention the care for the child. Kids are clumsy and stupid, they get hurt all the time, not to mention all those childhood diseases they get. So those opposed to universal health care because they don't want to pay, should therefore support abortions? You know, from a fiscal point of view.
@FrannyR: seriously. you want to force me to be pregnant by defunding my contraception and criminalizing abortion and then you're going to deny me maternity care??? so my kid can be born with health problems and be more expensive to the system? senator kyl can eat my shit, STAT.
I went to his senate website to tear him a new one. Noticed he has 2 adult children and 4 grandchildren. I guess he's saying his wife, daughter and daughter-in-law should have had to pay the thousands of dollars out of pocket for those deliveries! And the King Douche award goes to Jon Kyl!
His DC and Phoenix office said that they're receiving calls on this. We should keep calling until he publicly apologizes for his misogyny. The number for Phoenix is (602) 840-1891 and the DC office is (202) 224-4521.
BTW, their defense is that he's "not a misogynist" he was just trying to "control costs." Ugh.

Because I'd be more likely to have an abortion if I knew I wouldn't be able to have the financial support to get through the pregnancy and birthing.
