Damn I wish I lived somewhere that celebrates Halloween.
I'm now curious to make 'pumpkin pie', sounds tasty. But could someone enlighten me on whether it's a sweet or savoury dish? The recipes I'm looking at seem like they could go either way.
God, I love Halloween. But the marzipan stuff is really overpriced. You can get tubes of it at your local grocery chain and make your own. I don't know if they have it this year, but TJ's has a great pumpkin bread mix that works excellently for cupcakes, too.
@tiredfairy: Your pumpkins are adorable!
I make pumpkin bread from scratch -- it's really not difficult at all. The recipe I make is similar to banana bread, except you add a can of smushed pumpkin. It might be a bit heavy for cupcakes (more like muffins), but people go apeshit when I make it. I think I got it from allrecipes.com.
Those sugar skulls are almost as fabulous as the ones I can buy at *any* Mexican bakery towards the end of this month/early November! Please, please, please support a local business/artisan instead of ordering from the catalog if you have to have these. They are probably on $3-$5 each, too.
I want someone to tell me that this stuff isn't as delicious as it looks, because holy expensive hell.
I finally treated myself to some handmade caramels from Etsy for my birthday. They're en route! It worked out to about $50 for 1.5 lbs of caramels, shipped across country. But somehow I feel better about giving $50 to a small business.
Edible silver, as in it's actually silver?????? That is just like a giant FUCK you to economically struggling people everywhere. Oh you can't afford health care? FUCK YOU! I eat SILVER!
@Vivelafat says Sweep the leg, Johnny.: uhm, I don't believe it's actual silver. metallic sprinkles have been around for a while and aren't ridiculously pricey either.
@squeaky yet unclean: Uhmmm, I do know that unfortunately both edible silver and edible gold (and inedible gold) are often used in gourmet cuisine. I just didn't know if the silver used by Dean and Deluca is real or not.
It is really the height of arrogance because it adds no flavor to the food what so ever, and in the case of non-edible gold leaf, it has to be taken off the food and thrown away before you can eat. David Cross does a riff on this idea and he is dead on.
@Vivelafat says Sweep the leg, Johnny.: Acutlly silver was used in health care because of it's abilty to kill germs. Better than antibiotics but not as cheap. I have friends who DO drink Collided Silver daily because the cannot afford heath care. Here is a rundown. [www.quantumbalancing.com]
I work across the street from the SoHo D&D, and it's kind of like this little escape for me sometimes, especially right about now, as all their holiday things start showing up.
Also, their soups are like Nicole Kidman circa 1995.
@greengrey: The worst part of it is, as you look around, you start thinking, "Well, maybe $9 for a single cupcake isn't so bad!" or "Let me just pick up this $54 box of chocolates for a friend, just because" and then you're like, HOLD UP. It's nuts.
@BadenBaden: I know what you mean. Whenever I visit my bff in the city, I have to make a stop at D&D. I can't afford extensive shopping in there. But a coffee and confection of some sort really makes the trip.
@Zombie Ms. Skittles: Well, to be fair, a big part of the price is for the labor that goes into making them. I'm guessing each of those has to be decorated by hand.
That pumpkin cheesecake better have a surprise chewy center made of PURE SAPPHIRE-ENCRUSTED PLATINUM-DIPPED MINK COATS BY CHRISTIAN LOUBOUTIN to cost 70 bucks.
I love Dean and Deluca. I always find something in there I try to replicate at home. Looks like PinkSoxHat will be making pumpkin cupcakes with cinnamon cream icing this weekend!
My neighbor down the street pulls out a freaking popcorn machine and hands out warm buttered popcorn to all the trick-or-treaters...Maybe if I buy the Trick-Or-Treat bags I can compete...I will be broke for 2 years, but I will compete!
@missheidilynn: My mom hands out hot apple cider (spiked for the adults!). She won't be home this year and is afraid of dissapointing the kids. I'm just afraid the house may be egged.
The cakes are pretty, but I go through this and think "i can make that, and that and that." (I've been involved in baking since I was one.)
Also $70 for a cheesecake!? And I've been GIVING mine away, despite the fact that it has oftentimes been called "the best cheesecake on the face of the planet." What have I been thinking!?
