I'm not going to read any of these comments because I just watched the first disc of Season 1 and I don't want any spoilers! Does it get a lot better though? Because so far the first 3 eps are just like any old cop show to me (but with more profanity).

@velcrosneakers: The first three episodes are hard going. I watched them and thought to myself, "I don't get it. I'm really not getting this." But my best friend, who had given me the series, told me to stick with it for a few more episodes, so I did, and I've never been gladder of anything in my entire TV-watching life.

Stay with it. I promise you it'll start to click very, very soon.

i will admit that, as a new orleanian and an avid lover of both homicide and the wire, that, although i am excited about this, i am also very, very nervous about it. the wounds here are still so raw, and although i know that they do have a lot of local talent working on the stories, i still wonder if it's just too soon. and the fact that everyone else in america is just uber-excited only makes me feel a little more worried.

@southernbitch: I have to agree with you on this. I'm not from New Orleans but my husband is and travels there on a weekly basis for business and family purposes. I, of course, am there a lot too and truly love that city. I'm hoping that this show will show a more balanced view of New Orleans. Unfortunately, I hear horrible opinions of New Orleans and it's people almost every day from coworkers etc.(most on the them are on the very conservative side...hate it!) The media outside of New Orleans spends a lot of time focusing on crime rates and other bad statistics rather then the hard working people trying to make it there. I hope that this show will balance the bad with the good that exists there too.

@CalHobbes: yeah... and it's not just about the good versus the bad, to me, or even just abot my aversion to only highlighting the storm and the crime and the corruption. if anything, im okay with that, because i am pretty sick of the boosterism you encounter here in general. it's more that i feel like the city is finally starting to not think about the storm constantly. you can finally walk into a bar here and strike up a conversation with a stranger and not talk about the storm, where you lived before, where you evacuated to, did anyone you know die, how did your house fare, did you get insurance. we are finally moving on, in some respects, and, after spending five years coming to terms with it and getting annoyed every time you leave and have to talk to someone next to you on a plane about "how is new orleans", after five years getting angry over how the rest of the country just moved on to not really analyzing the layers of shit that caused this to happen.... the idea of the rest of the country seeing our dirty laundry playing out as fiction is really nervewracking. im probably going to hate the show and love it, which is the same way i feel about this city.

I have a total soft spot (a fontanelle, if you will) for Seth Gilliam, AKAed as Carver. That scene in Season 4 where he has to drop Randy off at the group home? And he just breaks down and loses his shit completely when he's outside? Still gives me chills when I think about it.

I shall now commence my voodoo rituals to reincarnate him in Treme.

I'm always up for Idris, but he would be the least likely to return. I'd be happy to see any of them again, as they are all very talented actors that don't get enough work.

Can we pleaaaase get a Black director in the house as well? I see the director hasn't been named yet, and if we are telling post-Katrina ghetto stories...let's give it a whirl!

@Sister Toldja: The Wire certainly used a number of African American directors, chief among them being Clark Johnson (he also played the long-suffering Baltimore Sun editor Gus Haynes in Season 5), and I'd imagine it would be extremely unlikely that the producers would change do otherwise for Treme. They've also been extremely supportive of female directors, too, so there's that as well. David Simon is nothing if not progressive.

I just saw that Melissa Leo is going to be in it. I'm very excited.

For anyone who liked The Wire, they should totally watch Homicide:Life on the Streets. It was excellent. Maybe not as many quirky characters, but wonderful writing.
