    [cache.gawker.com]" rel="lytebox" class="commentImageBut Helmut Newton had a STYLE [my fav shot], from what I see a lot of fashion photogs just shoot like ALL the other fashion photogs. I don't see a lot of off the hook creativity or originality in fashion photography.
    As a photographer myself, I think there is a whole lot of mediocrity in fashion shoots. Jump in the air! Twist your arms strangely! Put it on a white seamless!

    Meh. I'm a retoucher and you'd be surprised at how little these models need retouching. They're really beautiful and perfect physically as is. That's why they're on the cover of Vogue and the rest of us aren't.

    @Maulleigh: You missed the point entirely; he's talking about the quality of the photography, not the physical "perfection" of the models. Also, it's a shame you've bought into the lie that the parameters of beauty are so narrow as to be defined by fashion. In any age.

    Soooooooo true (re: who took it? who retouched it? etc.). It's astonishing how much work goes into making the so-so captures of some noted/big name photogs look like stunning images.

    He speaks the truth. Newbie fashion photographers, go ahead and fill your portfolio with tall blondes completely naked save for stilletoes, but don't pretend you're being cutting edge.

    And Mick Jagger was his best man when he married Deneuve!
    His photographs of Jean Shrimpton are wonderful too. I really think he's one of the best.

    @Casquivana: I met him when he came to our magazine and gave a talk about fashion photography. He was hilarious, kept doing Austin Powers - 'Yeah, baby, yeah'. Also, at the end, I was with our fashion director who had worked with him briefly years before, and when she said hello, he looked her straight in the eye and said "Hello, again. Did we fuck? I can't remember." She laughed her head off before saying "No. But you did keep trying." Brilliant.

    As a lifelong Mainer, my heart warms every time L.L. Bean is mentioned outside of my home state. It gives my blueberry-picking, lobster-cracking, potato-farming soul a pick-me-up. I mean, the store is hilariously over-priced and over-run with people, but it is near and dear to me all the same. Huzzah for Maine!

    @ProjectZoe: LL Bean jeans on sale are a sweet sweet thing. Every summer, my gfs are all "we have to go shopping for khakis and jeans" and I'm like "no I don't" and they say "again?" and I nod smugly, saved once again by the Bean catalogue from the torture of stores in the summer.

    @ProjectZoe: My parents live in Massachusetts and every time I visit, I make them drive me two hours north to Freeport. Love LL Bean! I bought a winter coat from the store and brought it to DC for the inauguration. I stayed toasty all day from 6am on, even in 20-degree weather. Their cold-weather gear rocks.

    I'm upset about the Jon Gosselin + Christian Audigier line not coming to fruition. I had a lot of jokes ready. Some were so good, I put them on flash cards. Oh well, I guess I'll have to wait until Jon embarrasses himself with something else. At least I won't have to wait too long.
