Billy: Well me and my friends were out last night trying to cover up the elicit activities of our frat, and I left it at the crime scene.
Teacher: Well after it is bagged, tagged and processed at the crime lab make sure I get it. Although I will have to take points off for it not being in on time. #fraternitynewspapertheft
Another sad, but true "Larry" story: Two high school students in my community tried to set an elementary school building on fire but couldn't get the flames started. One of them accidentally left his backpack on the roof with his homework in it for arson investigators to enjoy. #fraternitynewspapertheft
I dated a frat guy for like, a month, He was a jerk. One night we hung out, he ended up not being able to pay the cover (so I paid for both of us) then got so drunk I had to drive his car home and he threw up on my couch.
A while later he found my mom on myspace and sent her inappropriate messages!
Stealing the newspapers was wrong and stupid. But I understand why they did it. The Greek system is pretty much despised in modern American culture. Accusations against fraternities are generally believed out of hand "because that's what frats do." In other words, it's a case of guilty until proven innocent. Many of the frat guys I knew in college felt like no one was interested in their side of the story. They could do charity fundraisers and free BBQs all year, keep their GPAs up, generally cause no trouble whatsoever. But all it took was one report, one accusation, to destroy the entire organization.
If it comforts you at all, it seems like the AZ police aren't going to pursue the victim's allegations against Phi Kappa Psi. May your head rest easy this night. #fraternitynewspapertheft
@Our Lady of the Massacre: So of COURSE they had to steal 10,000 newspapers, I mean, what on EARTH was the alternative choice here?? They were obviously left with no other option. #fraternitynewspapertheft
@Our Lady of the Massacre: And thank you for proving mine. Anyone who says frats suffer from persecution when it's clear that police aren't taking the opportunity to investigate misconduct needs to re-evaluate reality a bit more carefully and watch their language.
Not investigating the possibility of a woman being drugged is hardly equivalent to persecution, especially, as Pandora says above, not in relation to wider issues of sexual violence against women. It sounds a lot more like "a free pass" to me.
@Our Lady of the Massacre: How has she proven your point? If the police are declining to investigate, then they have no intention of "destroying" this frat. Indeed, by refusing to so much as *investigate* the validity of the charges made, they're tacitly endorsing the organization and denying even the possibility that the accuser is a victim in all this. #fraternitynewspapertheft
@Our Lady of the Massacre: If the guys hadn't pulled a stunt like this it wouldn't have even been recognized. Even now that it IS recognized, they're not being charged with anything. Basically, they brought the attention, and any possible "persecution" on themselves by making a scene. And STILL they escape without any repercussions. We should all be so lucky to be thus persecuted. #fraternitynewspapertheft
@Our Lady of the Massacre: You mean like persecution based on gender or race or something? I mean, people choose to join fraternities in spite of their reputation.
I think it's something they just need to acknowledge they have to deal with when they decide to join. If you don't want the "guilt by association," then perhaps you shouldn't associate. #fraternitynewspapertheft
@Our Lady of the Massacre: Poor underprivileged frat boys.
I have no problem with one report, one accusation ruining the reputation of the organisation. This problem might be solved easier if they stopped sexually assaulting women, instead of trying to silence them when they share their stories. Just a suggestion. #fraternitynewspapertheft
@Our Lady of the Massacre: The frat guys I knew who were upstanding young gentlemen who kept their GPAs up and liked charity work and didn't sexually assault women never had false charges brought against them or were accused of anything shady. The frat guys I knew who were shady as fuck and joined a frat in order to "meet" girls and party were well-known for being "potential date-rapists" and we were wary about going to their parties. But they still had parties and people often were drugged and possibly raped there. Sooo anecdotal evidence there for you. Sorry but I just am not going to feel bad for these upper-middle class white males who CHOOSE to join an exclusive club then cry persecurtion. In my experience the poor reputation frat boys have earned is well justified. #fraternitynewspapertheft
@Our Lady of the Massacre: I like this sentiment. It's one of those that tend to be used to cow people into complacency when it comes to social problems. Most people are unwilling to consider any sort of systemic social ills, and sentiments like these feed into misconceptions.
It's the same reason a lot of people are so put off by, say, the Black Panthers, or radical feminists. One sees the great anger these groups express and thinks they're being unfair. Not all white people are racists! Not all men are misogynysts! But that's not the point and never was. These groups contend that there is a systemic apparatus of violence and inequality that transcends individuals. And so it is with fraternities. It might not be the case that every fraternity is a shithole and not every frat boy is a raging douchebag, but frat culture is such that misogyny / racism / violence elements often thrive and are a more or less accepted part of the status quo. So what we rail against is frat culture, not frat boys. Frat boys may or may not be a part of frat culture. I don't really give a fuck how many decent guys you know in frats. I know many myself. It doesn't change the fact that the propensity for pretty odious misogyny is there. #fraternitynewspapertheft
My brother was accused of raping a girl a few years ago while he was a freshman pledging a frat. Turns out, the girl just accused him of raping her because she just started dating one of his 'brothers,' unbeknown to him, and didn't want her boyfriend to be mad at her for willingly hooking up with someone else. She thought the only way for her to avoid getting into trouble with her b/f was to accuse my tiny, scrawny, sensitive little brother, who I can attest wouldn't ever hurt a fly, of committing this horrific act.
She saw him as a scape goat, and his reputation was ruined. He was kicked out of the frat and ended up transferring out of that University.
Although I'm obviously not arguing for rape or against victim's rights, I think we often jump to conclusions and immediately defend the "victim" when we don't know the whole story. Not to say in this case that she was not actually assaulted, but that sometimes in the end we may find out that the accused is actually the victim.
@shaie-d-pines: I don't see how your brother's (admittedly horrific) experience relates to this story. The Greek system is incidental to his circumstances-- he could just as easily have been falsely accused at a party unconnected to any frat. And, in this case, the lack of an investigation suggests that we'll never know whether the charges are true or false, whereas your brother seems to have gotten some resolution to his case. #fraternitynewspapertheft
I go to the University of Arizona and this totally backfired on the members of the fraternity. Their actions led to additional articles being written about the incident and the fraternity, as well as opinion pieces and letters to the editors.
The culture at the U of A is one that supports sexist behavior towards women, and this is something that I recognized long before this incident. Numerous times through out the year, in national articles (like Playboy) and in our own newspaper (The Daily Wildcat) comments from male students about choosing this school because of the scant amount of clothing (due to the weather) women wear through out the year.
Woman's issue are not taken seriously on this campus and reoccurring instances of women/women violence keeps happenings. Since last year when a student gave birth in her dorm and put her baby in the garbage, or several years ago when one female Native American student killed another Native student in her dorm room, I feel the university could do more to prevent these types of occurrences. The university has responded to these attacks on women by cutting funding to the Woman's Resource Center and continuing to charge a lot of money to see a counselor on campus.
I could go on about this, but it would just turn into a 10 page rant about the University slashing funding for the Woman's Resource Center, resources for student of colors, and the newly established lecture classes of 1,200 people. Phew. #fraternitynewspapertheft
@amped.amanda: I graduated from the UofA (Oooh of Ahhh, or Eeww of Eh) in the early 90's and the cuts were pretty bad too: we lost the fking marching band. At one point, the library lost $200k in periodicals funding. Many of my foundation classes were huge - Biology 1xx had ~1000 people, the final exam was held in the basketball arena. Mid-level anthro and psych classes, ~400 people per lecture. This was during the Savings and Loan Crisis, and was financially devastating to the school. I imagine that they've been thrashed even more so this time around... Good luck!
I do hope that UAPD can actually help the victim of the original crime get some justice, even if the Greek system only gets a wrist slap for the theft. #fraternitynewspapertheft
Every time my college paper wrote about a drugging/date rape/crime/underage rushee dead from alcohol poisoning in a dumpster/whatever at a frat, hundreds of these jerks would storm the office complaining that we were trying to make frats look bad by reporting it.
The actual raping and dying and crimes weren't a problem as much as the image issues, I guess.
as someone who went to a large state school and was in the greek system, i can assure you that these stories are not blown out of proportion. i can count on one hand my friends who WEREN'T date raped at some point during college. ugh.
What is it with douchey college guys totally misinterpreting The Godfather? It's "Leave the gun, take the canoli," not "Take The Sun, leave the past perfect conjugated verbs."I mean, not even close.
@morninggloria: You hit the funny, but got the quote backwards. It's "leave the gun and take the cannoli" and yes guys worship that movie way too much . #fraternitynewspapertheft
@token_illiterate_commenter: No wonder my dreams of being a prominent mobster were never realized. I was doing it backwards! Now, what am I supposed to do with all these stolen firearms?
@morninggloria: You could arm a Jezebel Instant Response Team, whose job it would be "take care of" any roofie slipping sleaze bags. #fraternitynewspapertheft
