I would interview Superman next, or maybe Jesus. Hey, if you're 11 you've already met and interviewed the president, you have got to have some serious connections.
I don't want to detract from the cuteness, but I don't understand Obama's point about why schools in the northeast can't have mangoes due to them not being grown in cold climates -- I'd bet schools in New Hampshire, Massachusetts etc have oranges.. But I digress :D
This is what is going to get me through another day of town hall-yelling. Although at the same time, I'm left thinking, "if an ELEVEN year old can show ambition and throughness and politness and decorum, why the hell can't people at town hall meetings?"
Oh my, this is so great! I'm so glad Damon got a chance to interview the President, especially since he worked so hard to get that chance.
I think this might be my new feel-good item, and so I'm going to have to re-watch this when I feel like throttling people after reading too much about the health care "debate".
@victoriasauce: I was tearfree until that part, and almost didn't catch it since he sort of said it quietly and off-hand, but that's when I teared up! Too too cute.
When I saw the tag, I was all, "Finally! My own profile in Jezebel!"
For real though, love this kid. I am amazed at how nervous he MUST be, but doesn't show it, and I Obama does not talk down to him, and gives him the same demeanor and respect he would any other journalist. This will help me get through another day of health care BS.
And hearing Obama utter the phrase "tater tots" with such gravitas was terrific.
Too cute! And I love the story of how he finally scored the interview.
I don't follow basketball, so I'd never heard of Dwayne Wade, but props to him for offering the President a one-on-one game with him in return for allowing Damon a White House interview.
@formergr: All you need to know is Dwayne Wade is the shit. If he and Paul Pierce joined forces to form a traveling band, I'd have to quit my life and follow them around and offer to be their roadie.
The best part of this is that the President talked TO Damon, not at him. People tend to talk down to kids, or underestimate their intelligence. Yes, he's an adorable kid, but he had some serious questions and wanted serious answers, and I'm glad that the President offered such things, as opposed to condescending baby talk for a photo op, like other politicians might have.
@hortense: Right. He didn't patronize him or act as though he was just humoring him. He seemed to be taking his questions seriously and answering them as he would those of an adult. Good on POTUS for that; and Damon makes me so proud. I wish I had that kind of ambition, guts and wherewithal as a kid.

And something about Obama with kids makes me smile like a big ole nerd.

I'm so happy Damon got his wish, so impressed at how he handled himself, and so thrilled that the president treated him with respect.
