A "mystery" watercolor painting by Beatrix Potter, the author and illustrator of the Peter Rabbit series, is expected to fetch £15,000 in an auction next month. The painting depicts a rabbit with a pink ribbon tied around its neck daintily sipping tea. The painting has become a "mystery" for experts because the subject never appeared in any of Potter's books and the painting was never reproduced in one of her books. [Daily Express]

A terrier cross pup named Leo risked his life on Sunday to keep guard over a litter of four kittens in a burning house in Melbourne, Australia. Firefighters say that Leo refused to leave the kittens' side in the burning house, despite the thick smoke and immense danger. The firefighters who discovered the pets had to revive Leo with oxygen and heart massage after the ordeal. A girl was also rescued from the fire and we are happy to report that everyone — furry and otherwise — is safe and sound. [MSNBC]

Adorable inter-species adoption strikes again: Jane Etheridge, an Englishwoman from Middleton, says that the lone surviving chick from her hen's recent batch of 14 babes (a fox and untimely death claimed the other 13) was recently adopted by her cat, Snowy. Etheridge says that Snowy cleans and cares for the chick, now named Gladys, and that Gladys loves to play with her adopted dad: "[Gladys] comes in and bounces up and down in front of Snowy and he just stands there and takes it and puts his arm around her," says Etheridge, adding: "They are the best of friends, very much so." We couldn't find photographic evidence of Gladys and Snowy's friendship, but we hope this other cat-chick adoption will suffice. [UPI]

Yay for women on the web: As today's NY Times reports, Meg Frost, the creator of Cute Overload, has recently released a page-a-day desk calendar with pictures from the website and the calendar rose to the upper ranks of Amazon's best-sellers list. The site is also raking in a chunk of change from ad sales, which range from $500 a week for a standard ad to $2,000 a week for a premium ad. Ultimately, the site is so successful because it's a warm antidote to all of the nastiness on the internet; who can deny the pleasures of noming on the cute ear nubs on a kitteh? A new study has found that contagious yawning, a trait thought only to occur among humans and chimps, is also found among dogs. The study tested 29 dogs and found that 72% of them caught the yawnz from humans. This may suggest that dogs have a rudimentary capacity for empathy. And yes, there is a video! Kitten Born With A Birthmark Love Note

A kitten was born in California this week with fur markings that look like they say "I <3 ." or "I Love Dot." What makes that such a big deal? The kitten's mom is named Dottie. Too cute! (Also, hearts on baby animals seem to be a trend: First there was the chihuahua from Japan with a heart-shaped spot on its fur, then the piglet born just this past February with a similar birthmark.)
