Has anyone ever seen Woman of the Year? I can never tell if it's ahead of its time or a little sexist.

Anyway. Love her. The Philadelphia Story is one of my favorite movies ever. And on top of it all, she was an atheist!

Um, her name is actually spelled Katharine Hepburn. I know because my parents named me after her and I've been correcting people on how to spell my name ever since. Do you guys, in honor of Katharines everywhere, mind changing the spelling on her name and on the tag for the post?

Watching her is at first cheering: if the experience of social anxiety and self-doubt extends even to this great lady, it's clearly universal. Therefore I'm not freakishly neurotic and I can expect that no one who uncovers my fears of inadequacy will judge me harshly for them.

As she goes on, though, I turn sad, because if Katharine Freakin' Hepburn still feels like a bore and quails away from parties, my self-esteem is unlikely to ever materialize, even if I should achieve some measure of success.

Lord knows I'm only worth .05% of a Katharine Hepburn.

My favourite Katharine Hepburn story is how, when crew 'stole' her pants in an attempt to make her wear skirts, she walked around in her underwear until they were forced to return her trousers. Awesome to the hilt!

@Vivien Smith-Smythe-Smith is already psyched for Girl Talk!: I use that story when I teach! It's one of the few stories where both men and women seem to get it, enjoy it, and not be threatened by it.
